nobles and jealousy
« on: November 08, 2012, 08:32:29 am »

Do noble get jealous of other dwarves' rooms for being too good, or just for being better than theirs? I like to have good rooms and personal dining for my really good dwarves ( like my high master armorer) but do t want to drive my countess into a tantrum.

Better, AFAIK, I've not checked too closely, since I don't pay attention to nobles. I do notice a lot of annoyed thoughts of superior room if I leave a noble in worse room than someone else have one, even without anything high quality.

Beside, just stuff more value into the noble's room to make them happier at having pretty room, that's what I does :D

The duchess freaks out if the king has a better room.  That. Pissed me off.

I responded by simply making all her rooms royal as well.

When my queen died, my Duke started getting the 'utterly traumatized by a lesser's pretentious dining / sleeping / burial arrangements." thought.

This is the case: As soon as the monarch dies, the consort loses it's noble status. This causes the dining and sleeping arrangements thoughts.
And also.. The dead Queen is no longer seen as a noble. I had given my Queen an artefact coffin. I still havent been able to stud / encrust a candy coffin enough for it to be worth more, so my Duke still has the bad thought about burial arrangements, although the other two ceased after I kicked the widower consort out of his home. I can't bring myself to deconstruct the Queens coffin though.

Moral of the story. Do not assign too valuable a coffin to your Monarch, at least not if you expect the Duke to live longer.

I actually examined the code behind this a while ago - complaints only happen if someone has a room of equal or greater value than the noble's room and that someone is less important than said noble.

Is it only more valuable, or do they freak out if someone has a room of equal value to theirs?

Moral of the story. Do not build coffins. Engrave slabs and atom-smash corpses. No exceptions.

As far as I know, total room value does not matter.
The thought stems only from the single item that is used to designate the room from. So, if you designate a room for your duke from a + wooden bed+, and pimp up that room with candy everything to add room value, the noble will still get a bad thought, is a lesser dwarf has a *wooden bed* in his plain, unsmoothed meager quarters.

Really? I've had nobles happy with plain bed but with valuable furnishngs, or just a few full weapon traps, while other dwarves have masterwork beds.

Wrong - it takes the entire room's value into account and calculates the "quality tier" for it (i.e. meager, modest, decent, fine, etc.) and then does the same for whatever room it's being compared to.

Well, since you have been looking directly at the code, I must assume you are right.

I sometimes get this when I get a new mayor and don't notice it for a while. When the former mayor keeps his office etc too long, the duke gets unhappy. It goes away relatively fast after assigning the rooms to the new mayor. However if you manually replace a mayor (to keep a non-mandate making one for example), the duke will keep the thought and will get it again everytime there is supposed to be an election.
