Can you expand off your original starting square to other areas of the world map

Not that i am anywhere near being able to do this but - you start on one sqaure out of hundreds (thousands) - is there any way to either tunnel into adjacent zones or send overland expiditions?

No, though it will probably be possible eventually.
For now you'll have to stick with the area you chose.
