The Prelude

The dwarven king stared at the map, frowning. He quickly beckons over one of his aides. "Why is our northern border still unguarded?" The aide looks over the map, before pointing at several marks on the map.

"That land is dangerous. See here? A human tower stands in the swamps. We sent a squad to destroy it, and they never returned. And here, the swamps themselves? The dead themselves rise from the muck. Now, over here... The forests at the edge? It's said to rain acidic blood, there..." She looks to the king. "No one will go there... Especially not with this..." She points to the map again. "That cave, there? Leads straight into the bowels of the earth... Our scouts sent to explore it died soon as they came out, gibbering madly."

"I see it. But, the goblins to the north... We need something to keep them from invading through such an open breach in our borders... You know how persistent goblins are? But it would be suicide to send someone there..." He scratches his beard thoughtfully. And then, he grins broadly. "Suicide.... Is Countess Rekora still making her insane demands?" He looks to the aide, who slowly smiles.

"She has been.... Do you think she's due for a 'promotion', sire?" She pulls a scroll from the shelf. "Her own lands, and a set of fo... Volunteers to shape it with?"

"Indeed. At worse, they would be slain. No real loss to us... But at best, they'll be able to build a strong enough bulwark to send more dwarves to defend our civilization. Send runners to our prisons, and to the mountainhomes. Spread the word that we are looking for brave dwarves to construct a new fortress... That great treasure and glory could be found there... And that any prisoners that go will be pardoned." He strokes his beard. "Who knows? It might even be true." He looks to his aide, before they both start laughing.

"Right away, sire... And I'll cancel construction on the execution room for the Countess?" She frowns, looking at her scroll.

"If she accepts her new role as Overseer...." The king stands up slowly, walking to the wall. Looking at the engravings, and smiling again. "Well, off with you!"

The Game

You are one of the dwarves sent on an expedition to build a new fortress! You may be a prisoner, seeking an escape, or a peasant, hoping for glory, but it no longer matters. All that matters, is one thing. Can you dig it?

Horrible puns aside, the major rules are as follows.

Actions will be rolled on a six-sided die.

Background

Background : Urgof was a former soldier imprisoned for murdering his entire squad when they tried to stop him from killing enemy soldiers who has surrendered, He was sentenced to life in prison and expected to die staring at the bars of his cage but then was given a second chance because soldiers were needed to protect a new group who was setting out for parts unknown and so he volunteered straight away.
It was not until several days later he discovered where he was to be sent and realized he was probably better off in prison but it's to late to go back now so he will have to make the best of it and do his best to survive in the new environment and try to keep the rest of the party alive for his own sake.
Whether he will be able to control his temper or not he does not know but it's to late to worry about that now and what can they do to him if he fails? Send him back to his old cell?

Background
Thanen wasn't exactly a smart dwarf, but he was also told there was no need to be a genius to kill enemies by swinging a sharp piece of metal around. Background
Tholtig is the seventh child of a rather large and wealthy family, well known for their fine craftsdwarfship, especially in glass, gems, and metals. Unfortunately, this meant that while she received top-notch training and a fairly safe and comfy childhood, there really wasn't room for yet another gemcrafter in their mansion complex full of gemcrafters.

With her true calling already taken at home, Tholtig did the obvious and began looking abroad. Unfortunately most of that was taken also (and/or run by lunatics). Perhaps not surprisingly, then, she leaped at the chance to get in on the ground floor of a brand new fortress, despite curious mentions of pardoned criminals and such.

Background:
Believe it or not, Rigoth's had expireince with this manner of thing before. In fact, he's gone on this sort of trip before. It's also what led to his incarceration as a traitor. There had been a desperate quest to establish an outpost in a far-away land, and he'd followed as their metalworker. Upon their arrival, they set up camp and things generally went well for a while. Then the mayor was elected.
"Rigoth, give me 300 brass trumpets."
"Ha! Good one, sir."
"I'm serious."
One month later, the trumpets still werent there, but Rigoth was. So, he was sent to prison to rot. Just a few months afterwards, the ex-outpost was besieged by goblins. The dwarves had no weapons, no armor, and no metalsmither. To say little, it did not go well. Except for Rigoth. He's in fact, still somewhat grateful for being sent off, but not so grateful as to reject a chance at freedom when it came to him.

Background

While she's rather useless, even for a noble, she IS the overseer. And it seems she has inherited a small talent for priestly magics along with her title. These are about the only ways she contributes, other than demands.

Background

Background:
Kivish served as the loyal and skilled chef of the mountainhomes, providing decadent meals to the nobles of higher houses despite their outlandish desires and demands. It came as a shock to him when, in the aftermath of a botched assassination attempt of a noble via ballistae, Kivish's latest meals to the nobles were poisoned. The resulting scandal saw Kivish packing to provide his services to a new fortress, a mercy gesture compared to the execution that would await most others suspect of high treason.

Chapter 1. "Strike the... Swamp?"

[16] After a long journey, the wagon has arrived. And the overseer had it placed on a small 'island' in the swamps, sitting on one of the few dry places in those swamps. There are a few trees nearby, and several strange, waving tendrils rising out of the murk several meters away. A dark mountain rises in the distance, but it's so foggy that not much more is visible. You take stock of the supplies that were 'kindly' sent from the mountainhomes.
