dwarfs attacked by rock?
« on: November 07, 2012, 10:06:17 am »

Why are my dwarves attacked by / fighting with my rocks?

One of my dwarfs was found dead, and I later looked at the combat reports (never knew they were there!) and found out that

The {dacite} strikes The Stoneworker in the lower body. etc with the stoneworker ending up dead

I did notice that this tends to happen on a downward slope right next to my stone stockpile. Is my conclusion correct that one should not have stone stockpiles next to upward slopes?

Are you sure they were not hit by minecarts?

it is possible that dwarfs are dropping the stone into the stockpile from above the ramp which could be causing the stones to fall onto others who are passing by. I don't have any stockpiles next to ramps so i can't say for sure.

That means the item in question was somehow dropped on the dwarf. Since you typed it with curly braces (meaning it's forbidden), I'm going to guess you have a garbage dump zone next to the ramp. If there is an empty tile next to a dump zone when a dwarf goes to put something in it, he'll drop it off the edge instead. Use an actual stone stockpile instead of a dump, or make sure the dump zone has a border of solid ground.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?

No minecarts yet, so that can't be it.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Stockpile_Design recommends having stockpile and workshop on different z-levels, connected by ramps, to make it easier to increase the size of either.

Quote
"A better strategy is to put the workshop's stockpile above or below it. This keeps the stockpiles close to the workshops, lets the workshops expand and you can expand the stockpiles above and below as necessary. It works particularly well with multiple similar workshops working off the same stockpile. "

If it is the case that rocks can fall down downward slopes when they are dropped off (which makes some sense) then the wiki should probably have a note of caution that it is wiser to put the storage below the workshop(s) rather than above it?

I think that TKGP hit the nail on the head: I have indeed a dump zone right next to my stone stockpile so I can get rid of superfiuous rock (of which there always seems to be a good deal). I have a separate pile for ore / flux stone, so I can just d-b-d half the pile whenever it is full; although it would be nice to somehow dump only the non-magma safe rock...

Yeah, dwarves will dump anything into any pits right next to dump zones. Going down the ramp sometimes seems to give dwarves concussions from what they carries, but I've not figured out how that works, yet.

Since it's forbiddened, it's most likely dumped, if it's not, it's probably ramp weirdness :D

You could set your stockpile to only take specific rocks, if you're having issues separating out magma-safe stuffs.

Right, I forgot that dump zones can also be used to dump stuff in a pit... and the dwarves must have decided that a ramp looks just like a pit.

You learn something new every day. Good thing that some migrants just arrived to fill up the ranks. Poor Mrs StoneWorker was not happy, but she did admire a fine chair lately, so she's okay about it. Dwargs and their priorities :-)

I just did this yesterday with a bunch of seeds.

My favorite rock attack so far is a dwarf is carrying a boulder of Cassiterite.  He gets actived to train and for some reason carries the rock to the barracks.  I notice him at this point because he's moving really slow.

Then he starts sparing, and somehow flings the rock and hits himself and his sparring partner.  What an amazing twit.
