it actually means the opposite. generis means genre, de sui generis means "of it's own genre", in the sense that it's unique, and deserves a category just to itself

You better tell the creator of the game that... because he outright calls his own game "Generic"

I think that was sarcasm.

Necrobumping this on account of the recently published pre-alpha video, showing off how development's been going. Best view in HD to see the collisions and stuff.

Spoiler: Featured in the video (click to show/hide)

Overall it brings back memories of Ultima 7 for me, so I'd say it's shaping up pretty great.

I remember that kind of inventory from "playing" Ultima Online. It'd be way cooler if there were straps and packs physically modeled on your character that you had to stuff objects into but that would be way too much work. It is kinda silly you can throw a bardiche and a zweihander into a rucksack =p

The dev needs to get the guys from Wolfire to do all their procedural animation stuff.

From what I saw, the polearm guard especially, they only have one moveset/combo. The guard swings horizontally twice then stabs, repeat.

Waiting to see what the game looks like when it's not "pre-alpha"

Also just a minor thing simce I looove polearms. It always bugs me when people in games hold them left handed, despite being right handed for everything else.

EDIT: I hope that teleportation thing is either a cheat/dev thing or some very very high level magic.

The procedural animations in Wolfire games aren't exactly the same kind, though. Like the characters in Overgrowth don't need to actively balance themselves during combat, and their movement is pretty floaty (more abstract). This is basically like trying to make an AI to control QWOP.

And yeah, the teleport is OP. Should be way costlier to teleport and really high-end stuff to tele-kill someone. Probably just a dev thing to show off the features quicker. Here's hoping they make Ultima 8/Gothic style climbing for non-magic characters as well.

Looks superb, I'm glad they haven't cheapened it with a first-person perspective - it's nice to see games go back to the isometric view for once.

Huh. This is actually pretty cool looking. I don't normally go for games like this, but I'm tempted to back this one just because it's so refreshing to see combat that actually kind of looks like actual combat for once.

Yeah, I am excited for it... I did notice a few things.  They cheat with the running physics somewhat, which is understandable, but it looks kind of weird.  They also put too much focus on arms in combat, instead of using your whole body in swings, if that makes sense.  Weapons also seem a little -too- heavy, but that may be due to the arm thing, instead of controlling it more with your body.

But other then that, it looks really good.  Here's to hoping they continue to improve it!

I don't like the fact that they cheat with the running. I don't see why they can't put physics into the movement, as was done in the new Fifa games, where you actually had to shift your weight around when you changed direction.

I really like the look of the combat, though. The realistic collisions of weapons and stuff is exciting.

I imagine it's a pre-alpha thing. It looks kinda like they got it working for walking, just not running.

Yeah, it seems as if the body and legs are focused on trying to keep the character standing/walking and the arms are used solely to swing the weapon.

To be fair, I think they've already achieved more than a lot of people were expecting with the physics, and it's only going to get better.

/necro because reasons
Seems they're still working on it. Released a combat demo two months ago under an NDA.

I hope to see some kinda bone-breakage system that effects movement & a few martial 'styles' to tighten up legwork & swing animations myself.

I don't like the fact that they cheat with the running. I don't see why they can't put physics into the movement, as was done in the new Fifa games, where you actually had to shift your weight around when you changed direction.
That might be solved by applying better animations rather than full-physics-ing the stuff. Looks like they have a good engine & all, but physics games tend to get wonky pretty easily.

Necro post, cause now there's a new thing for beta backers with a little dungeon crawl campaign where you get to dick around with the physics system (in particular see minute 5 of the video).

Fun but hard. No save system, so you start over when you die. Have to either play smart and avoid unnecessary fights or get good in the arena first.

EDIT: Actually there is saving, but it's basically a rogue-like right now.

That looks pretty radical.

Man.  I kinda thought this game was a scam - kinda still do, to be honest.  The KS sounded too good to be true, and I haven't been seeing much news on the site, especially since I'm not a backer.  I really hope it turns out.
