How about California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Texas, and New England all form one country, and the rest of the US can do whatever it wants... Oh wait, there wouldn't be anything left.

Please don't just lump the Midwest with the Southern states, the more populated Midwestern states (the ones near the Great Lakes) are nothing like them.

We'll just break off and join Canada then...although I think those states combined have more population than Canada (IL, OH, MI, IN, WI, MN).

For New England, you could probable get Mass, Connecticut, Vermont and maybe Maine to agree to a merger.

New Hampshire and Rhode Island might kick up a fuss though, I doubt they'd go along with it.

Maine also has a split movement, dont think they will be willing to merge if they are barely willing to stick together.

Hey hey hey, Wait. You're ignoring a powerful influence on Conneticut, NY State. Conneticut is alot weaker for not being part of it. Jersey too (though you didn't mention it). You're ignoring NY's "I'm Huge, hear me roar!"ness. Hell, I'm already half-expecting a announcement of annexation of Jersey right now. If there is a redrawing, New york is going to annex everything nearby. It's how the City of Greater New York was born anyway. Annexed Brooklyn. And Long Island city. And Staten Island.

That's a excellent example righ there. Staten island. Barely NY. Still is never getting away.

There was apparently at one time a short-lived secessionist movement within Rhode Island.  ???

Then they'll have to take New Jersey as well. That's a dealbreaker.

Rhode Island was:

The first to rebel against British rule.
The last to join the union, and even then, under coercion (the majority of the state believed they would be able to function better as their own country)
One of only three states with the legal right to secede from the Union at-will (It was a requirement for them joining at all, even under threat of war)

Questioon, if they secede and the US invades, would that take longer then half a day?

I'm not entirely sure the US would even notice.

Well, I do guess it holds, uh. .03? Percent of the population. That... matters? I guess. I dunno. Why is rhode island a state, again? It's kinda' tiny.

That long?
But we would have a problem with the U.N having a hissy fit over us invading people who want their own country.  They always do like getting involved in everyone's business.
And why are we physically unable to keep within the semi-rails of states applying for statehood?

Also, the US would have no reason to invade - unlike with the south, Rhodey have a perfectly valid escape clause.

They are also surrounded on all sides by America, and are totally dependant on imports from it.

And since when does the US give a shit about the UN?
