Considerably more importantly, the joint has about a tenth of the american population. Not sure how well the states would weather losing that much population in one go :P

If we're going to do something like ditching a state, it'll need to be one of the low population, out of the way ones. That aren't important for other reasons.

We'd probably have better luck consolidating a few or splitting another one up. I'm pretty sure most of north florida wouldn't mind breaking the state into a couple of pieces.

Man, I don't want statehood to become a crappy political thing. I guess it always has been.

You don't remember the highly politicized nature of the addition of states in the antebellum period?

We're going to have to find another state to add which will vote republican instead of democrat, and have the same number of electoral college votes as Puerto Rico, before our current legislature would ever approve statehood for Puerto Rico. (That, or give Alaska more electoral college votes.)

(Unless, of course, they suddenly decide to say "screw it, let them in, maybe they'll like us and we'll get their votes!")

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Before the they doubled down on the immigrant xenophobia in the last couple years, the republicans could pretty well count on the conservative catholic latino's to vote their way more often than not.

Yep, pretty much dropped the ball there.

How did I not notice this earlier? Because it happened yesterday. How did it get to 8 pages so fast?

What do I not have against San Fransisco?
Actually... I have no idea.   I'll just go with them being the #1 producer of smug in the country.
Also, as I have yet to take U.S history/Constitution/allthatstuff, what do you gain in statehood that you don't in being a territory, other then having senators and representatives?

All sorts of benefits, including, Governers! federal Money! Access To all other states! Bragging Rights! People give a shit!

Seriously, it's significantly poorer there, likely due to the US not caring.

We'll trade you Quebec for it.

Southeast California actually does have a minor secessionist movement.

What are the odds that PR will actually become a state?

Also, how soon could it happen?

As soon as PR's government drafts a state constitution and submits it to Congress. If Congress passes it, it's a state.

So how many congressmen/women and electors will the new state get? I haven't heard any mention of it yet, and I'm feeling too lazy to dig around and find out.
