I'm down with the original. After all, who cares about those 38 latecomer states anyways?

Alternately, we could do some merging based on population density -- combine Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Montana into Rocky Mountania.

Combine New Hampshire and Vermont into New Vermshire (they'd even have a nice squarish state border)

Combine everything from Minnesota south to Oklahoma into Flyoveria.

Combine the West coast states into Pacifica (not a new idea, btw).

It's difficult to hang a flag without a straight edge from a straight flagpole.

As for the design they'll probably just go to something that looks like this:
