So... Welcome, America, to your 51st? (Puerto Rico Thread)
« on: November 07, 2012, 08:16:36 am »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rican_status_referendum,_2012

Basically, Puerto Rico has voted for change, and the change they've voted for is statehood! But will they actually become a state? I've no idea how this process works, or how long it takes, or even if it's guaranteed! (The Referendum was specifically non-binding) And talking about it in the election thread just saw it swamped over... you know... election stuff.

So if you have any celebrations, comments, or questions about Puerto Rico's march to statehood, this is the place to post.

I'll try to keep the first post updated with relevant information.

Huh. Takes 2/3 of the House and Senate to approve it. Which means it likely won't pass through Congress. Latinos have become almost monolithically Democratic over the last 12 years, despite strong Catholic and pro-life influences because the GOP has been so derptastic on immigration and social services. Adding PR to the Union just gives Democrats an extra couple of electoral votes every four years.

Not really. There are over 4 million immigrants in the country legally, jumping through the hoops of red tape that we have constructed. Because of all of those who are trying to get into the country illegally, those 4 million cannot get their citizenship because the system is so clogged up and redundant. What conservatives want to do is protect the border so that it is easier to be granted citizenship because there are no illegal immigrants.

Sounds like they're trying to imitate arizona, with less desert and with more island/bueracracy.

Man, I don't want statehood to become a crappy political thing. I guess it always has been.

Not to mention the pragmatic aspects: where we gonna stick that extra star on the flag?? How do we divide states into even categories? How is Wyoming going to handle going from the 50th most populated state to the 51st?

We could just merge a couple states to get back down to 50, or add another really quickly to get up to 52.
