(yet another) Quick question - why are my plants withering?
« on: November 07, 2012, 07:40:32 am »

Just noticed i have withering plants - which explains my food problem

i have 6 5*5 plots and 2 dwarfs allocated to farming - and i gather any dwarf can harvest

any tips on how to farm more efficiently?

thanks

I'm fairly sure the only cause of withering is just sitting unharvested for too long. Make sure "dwarves all harvest" is set in the (o)ptions menu, and then check if your food stockpile is full. With that many farms, it's easy to fill up your stocks, especially if you forget to make enough pots.

Don't have enough food stockpile set to take plant
Accidentally ordered your dwarves to not haul food in {o} menu
Or doesn't have food stockpile at all, which is likely since you mentioned food problem

Rule of thumb for feeding and boozing dwarves with plump helmet year-around is one farm plot per dwarf with beginninger farmers, around 25 tiles to a farmer, and enough stockpile to hold a season or two of food and drink. They eats twice a season, drinks four times a season. Helps to have the farmer do nothing but farm at that point. Legendary can feed and booze three dwarves to a tile with plump helmet.

All dwarfs are set to harvest.

I have an empty area designated to food storage  WHOA!!  No i don't (thought i'd better check) - I had customised this to exclude seeds but somehow ended up excluding everything!!!  doh!!!

Will food be stored in barrels as i have loads of them but no pots.

thanks

barrels and pots are the same thing basically. Plants are withering if there's not enough stockpile space for them or your farmers aren't fast enough to harvest them, but that is rarely the case. Set a stockpile to accept plants.

Pots are more than twice as heavy and stores twice as much as barrels, but is otherwise pretty much identical, it's better to put wood to use as pots for food. Except for a couple buggy process and buildings, but brewing aren't affected!

For me, the choice between wooden barrels and stone pots is a function of how much wood is available.  On maps with lots of trees, I'd go with barrels.  If trees are a precious resource, save them for beds, ash -> soap, and charcoal.

thanks all - that should sort out my food probelms

i think i may have been doing something wrong with custom stockpiles - only with 2 next to each other they both ended up the same.  From memory there is no "accept" buton on these screens - does that mean you can only have one custom zone on the whole map, or is there a bug or (more likely) what am i doing wrong

I've never used custom stockpile option. I pauses the game, set up stockpile with what I want to focus on, then go into specific details to set it up the way I want it. Then unpause and let the dwarves work with it. Hauling tasks don't get assigned if game's paused.
