Do MUD's and ASCII Graphics Provoke Insanity?
« on: November 06, 2012, 07:56:47 pm »

There is an article out that basically says that playing too many MUD's or games with low-end or older graphics makes you more creative, but that in turn makes you crazy.  Its because you have to fill in the blanks and stuff which makes sense.  I thought about those games with invisible walls and stuff from back in the Dreamcast or N64 days.  The content was there but everything else was kind of up to you.  Sorry if my examples suck, what do you guys think?

and heres the article:  http://www.explosion.com/do-muds-and-ascii-graphics-provoke-insanity/

Nope they don't. It's just all propaganda being used by the graphics obsessed console peasants, attempting to make it seem that the PC gaming Master Race and Bourgoise are weak and unfit to rule over gamers.

Haven't read the article, but surely books would have the same effects?

Crazy? I'm not crazy! No, not at all...

In all seriousness, my kneejerk response would be: No, not measurably. Also plenty of room for the correlation fallacy there, because I get the feeling that the author of that article didn't do any sound research. On second glance, yep. Just a short "thought for the day" snippet with a few screencaps.

The rational response would be no, that is absurd! People are very good at understanding symbolism without going crazy, we have been doing it for a long, long time!

But then I look at Bay12 and rethink my position...

But is it that DF makes people crazy (and keeps them that way after they stop playing), or is it that people who enjoy games like DF tend to be crazy, and crazy tends to attract crazy?

I just said crazy a crazy amount of times, yo. Crazy.

Really, the whole premise of this is silly. The article drops that title but fails to follow through. And in fact I can't really tell whether he's bashing ascii graphics or praising them.

Sanity is overrated anyway.

So is insanity, for that matter.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

If it ends up being only the things you made up, go ahead and take a break.

Should be the other way around. If you're just mindlessly absorbing the information from the game, you're much easier to be manipulated by it, amongst others.
