Well okay then, thanks for improving the thread! I'd put in in the lead post but you're close enough to the top that people will see it.

More like the depiction of Moria in the LOTR movies in my opinion, with those empty chambers full of columns.

While pretty awesome, I'm going to have to point out that Mordor is a fairly large geographical region and doesn't actually include any great artificial spaces underground, at least that we see in the Lord of the Rings. Indeed, perhaps you meant Moria?

If I recall correctly, the game Mirror's Edge had a level in one of these things.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Yes. At the time I thought "This is a ridiculously large sewer. How unrealistic. Nobody would ever need a sewer this tall. What a silly game." Now I understand.

This is a pretty basic dwarven fortress design, if you include side passages for rooms and crap covering the ground. Access tunnels to the top included.

Magma access tunnels, specifically.
