I'll see if we can get a mod to move it, if not I'll make us a new thread after the polls. Thanks guys :). Remember to vote please.

We only have 3 tallies so far.

As one of the people who would very much like to keep it 4x4 so my computer doesn't explode with impotent rage, I'm totally cool with other participants using 5x5. My fort will be among the first to die anyway, no doubt, and it is, after all, not a competition.
Also, am I the only British person playing? If so, it will be Fun posting constantly out of sync.

I find times throughout the day to play no matter what.

Between school/lifting/this I have no life.

Point being I'm in the U.S. but you'll see me on whenever. If we have identical biomes/conditions and everything other than a 1x1 difference I don't see the problem but if enough people dislike me doing 5x5 I will come down. No matter what I want to make sure everyone gets to have fun that signed up :).

The only thing I can't do is go below 4x4, that would be doing my rig Betsy here a dis-justice.

Map size affects a few things, especially on a very flat map.  One of the things affected by this is of course, the 'amount' of the surface visible to hostile creatures who happen to be on the map right then.

This can really affect a start.  If the game is beginning with hostiles that wander, there's a lot more map for them to wander on in a 5x that doesn't happen to bring them into sight of your starting 7.  This is a little less of an issue when there's elevation differences, if you're lucky enough to be surrounded by hills or such.  Map size is such a huge factor in this, on a flat 3x map, a wandering hostile almost always spots you within a couple game days of spawning.  4x is a bit safer.  5x is much safer.

I usually play a 5x map, and that's the size embark that feels right to me - I just think that for maximum 'we started the same' value, the size of the embark probably should be the same too.

My thoughts on embark size are:
Larger Embark = more resources (wood, metal, candy, underground tree farm area, etc)
Larger Embark = larger spawn area for creatures so creatures possibly spawn further from the fort entrance

But I'm cool if everyone else is cool.

Noted, that's two people in that direction. I am most concerned with everyone feeling like they are playing the same map as everyone else. We might be able to keep these forts going for quite some time permitted we survive if we go with 4x4. I think I'm in agreement.

Amusingly, anyone reading this thread can vote.... we may end up with our lurkers (if any) helping us decide where to play.

Heh indeed, I'd thought of that, no way of shutting them out so nothing to be done about it.

May make ending the poll difficult though.

Got done setting up my embark skill and equipment load out. I'll be trying out a few new things.

Just waiting to be told where to go.

Same, it's really a toss up between Metra's and Imp's I think, unless we see sudden votes in other areas.

In the case of either I think we'll need either some starting traps or military.

Is mine really that good?
I just wanted evil, metals, trees, and river.
Because I felt this should be an "easy" embark yet still challenging enough for experienced players.

I guess being in the right hand corner help abunch to for being easily findable.

Whoseever location gets chosen should post the 'official' location, some of the screenshots (mine) have 4x4.

My scorching biome will make you die of dehydration as you run to the river to cure your dehydration. Imagine entire sieges dying to the heat alone.

I plan to get the appropriate pics up and everything once we start.

As far as in game view (not playability but just aesthetics) mine stuck out by a lot, Toady has done an incredible job with some of the good/evil flora.

Yours is pretty interesting, LOTS of flux, in fact pretty much nothing but layers of it, it has cassi-tin pretty close to the surface and silver at about level 23 or so, beyond that there are no metals other than candy.

The temperature gives me interest as well, not sure if evil weather will make it through the heat.

Personally I voted for the ocean side but we've got 4 really really playable maps here.

We've got ten votes now, not really any way to verify if they are all players. I think we may yet wait until the deadline just to see what the numbers come to be.

Personally, I don't have anything against our lurkers (if we're lucky enough to have any) watching.  Sometimes they talk later, whether they do or not, they follow because they are enjoying and if they voted, it's probably because that's what they'd enjoy watching the most
