Sidenote, if our embark doesn't give us such an instant survival challenge that we HAVE only one solution for staying alive and all must do it as quick as possible, then we're surely going to play with considerable variety...  If you all play similarly to me I'm going to be sooooooo surprised  :P

I don't really like to vote blind, and I'm blind until a bit after I get home from work tonight, so I'm not voting on anyone's map, nor offering my own yet!  But there's no need to wait for me to be able to vote - I'll go with whatever we decide on and have a heck of a lot of fun with it.  And if you DO wait for me to vote, I'm going to be offering things that are survivable, sane, comfortable, convenient (at least by my standards).  Likely to have a high number of types of biomes with as many types of differences between them possible (a mix of high and low, a mix of wet and dry, moderate temperatures.

Seeing what you guys are suggesting for our embarks, none of you would vote for my suggestions anyway! ;D

A few things I notice (even blind) about The Gristly Biles (swamp embark)
Appears to be just one biome?

It's way way in the tippy top upper corner of the world, on the hot side.  Might want to take the cursor on the overland map and move slowly south.  How much area is listed as scorching there?  If it's only scorching right around that spot, then it's probably not to crazy hot.  But if it's scorching for a very long way, well... scorching is a range, and the deeper into that range you go, the hotter it gets.  If the distance is really far, we might not care what syndrome is in whatever muck may be raining down on the area - the heat outside alone might quickly become dangerous for any dwarves or other life forms above ground.

I like that it has a brook.  And it's a brook, not a stream/river/lake  8)  And given the scorching climate, we might need that water.  That could be the only water we get.

If it's really flat, then I like that too, but if it is flat, the terrain suggests a fairly shallow map.

A few things I notice (even blind) about The Barb of Fins (mountain valley embark)

It's scorching and has no permanent surface water source.  Expect no water from the surface after the very start of the game.

it has a non-evil area and an evil area.  It has mountains and non-mountains.  It's likely to run very deep underground.

A few things I notice (even blind) about The Jungle of Hacks (mountain/forest embark)

It's got reasonable weather; otherwise my earlier comments (dual evil biomes and the potential difficulty of that) are all I see.

Voting blind, cause it's fun to:  I like the mountain valley embark a TINY bit more than I like the other two, even with the lack of metal ores.  If I had been picking a site, I can almost promise you I'd not have picked any of these to suggest  ;D

10 o' clock Hilton Head Carolina time I'm going to close the polls and we will start.

(bout an hour and 20)

Unless it's decisive before then.

Are we electing a president or an embark site here?
Yours just outclasses all others for newbs like us, even I voted for it.

Hey I'm a nooblord too! I just spent all day looking at embarks, I'd like to wait and see what Imp can generate/come up with before we decide if everyone is willing to wait.

THE POLLS ARE TO BE POSTPONED!

No rush Imp but if I might ask when you will be off work? I'll need to keep my self busy until then, practically soiling my self now with excitement.

Edit-

This is going to also serve as a great learning experience for many, I've got an initial question I'd like to ask.

If we don't have any weaponizable metals would we set up a heap of a trade system as our first task and then tackle getting metals or what? That sounds really slow! I don't mind whatever we do and I want whatever will be a combination of the most challenging/fun/!!fun!! but do you ever get a military running in a place like that?

If we pick an embark tonight, I'm starting play tonight.  You do NOT have to postpone for me.

Plus, I'm a moderate.  The area I pick might have ONLY ONE evil square in it.  That could even be evil ocean, looks like we have a huge ocean in the middle?

But really, I'm a moderate.  After I look at everything... I might suggest a non evil area.  If I cant find any evil-containing areas I like and DO find a non-evil I think is great.

Sooo.... y'all might not vote for anything I suggest, really truely  8)

But if it makes you happy, I'll peek around, even after voting closes, and offer 'the imp alternate that never was' if you want to see it.

As to when I get off work, about an hour from now - then I have to get home, deal with dinner, and then -start- looking for an embark site.  You're sacrificing a lot if you want to wait for my input here - I probably wont have anything to offer for another 3-4 hours.  That means delaying our vote a full day, I think?  At least a half day, cause surely you wont all be awake that long?

If you decide to vote now, I've thrown a vote.  looks like we do have a bit of a landslide, no?  If you close this tonight, I'll offer you my suggested embark so you can see what I would have voted.  If you decide to hold the vote - I'll also offer an embark spot, I still bet none of you would vote for it, AND none of us can start play tonight.

Your choice, OP!

Where I live it's starting to get late.
I find this delay almost welcome.

Nonsense, I'll be up all night, at most you and I and maybe 1 or 2 other players might get a few hours over on the other guys, and it's not a competition anywho, no man left behind.

You seem rather intelligent and knowledgeable as far as the game goes and I'd like to see what you can come up with.

That is indeed an evil ocean in the middle there, I'd prefer that the site you pick would either include evil tiles or maximum savagery tiles to keep things challenging. Won't be much challenge for a group of brains to take on serene areas.

It's much more fun to see us all die anyway ;).

I can wait a few hours for input as long as when you do start looking you update us, one thing I can't stand is being excited all by my self.

Everyone else okay with catching up to us night owls tomorrow morning/day?

Noted Metruption :).

Sidenote about savagery... savage areas are not necessarily harder to play than calm.

Take mountains... calm and neutral mountains have the same beasties, and there's only one addition if that mountain's evil or good

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Deserts ARE a totally different situation, with several interesting creatures headed out of the savage parts:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some biomes, like temperate coniferous forests, have no difference in creature types between calm, neutral, or savage.

Edited to add.... I lied.  Savage temperate coniferous forests do get one beastie that the less savage ones don't: fox squirrels, not that they're a challenge  :D

Fair. Again digging through that pool of knowledge. I know there are some creatures that aren't available in certain lower rating areas that I'd like to see otherwise. Like those scorpions or werewolves.

Fox squirrels.....*shiver*

I was looking at what an embark with the Fiery Gem civ means.

You do realize that you can't embark with an anvil and they don't have access to iron?

I'm cool with that, but not getting an anvil until the hoomans come makes shallow metals moot.

I switched that to Feral Mansions. Just wanted a uniform civ :). Don't want this to be CRAZY hardcore.

I'm not CRAZY set on shallows either but I'd like at least one weaponizable metal somewhere.

Okies.

I wasn't terribly concerned about the lack of weapon metal if we weren't getting anvils anyway.

Although I was going to bring a lot of sand with me on that embark...

I'm not dorf enough to realize that the ore on the embark's our only source of weapon metal.

I'm home, fed, downloaded, and starting to search.  This still might take a bit, but it's begun.  Thanks for holding for me - this is already fun!

Oh dear. The greatest embark of our time... has BEGUN.

I'm going to look for more as well. I'm not going to peek at the metals within either.

Anyone still up feel free to join in again.
