That and I have no idea how to build floors over walls.

Consider starting a new game and starting with enough stone or wood for testing purposes in some safe-looking area.

Build yourself a test wall somewhere with a few z-levels to play with above it.  Either outside, or in some multi-z level opening.  It only needs to be a couple tiles long.

Build a ramp on the side of it, and then go up a z-level and select to build a 1x1 floor.  See where you can place that floor now, it'll be green if you can and red if you cant.  I'd check every square that touches your wall, even diagonally, so you can see what does and doesnt work.  Maybe build a few things.  Maybe later deconstruct things, to see how cave ins related to constructions and removals work.

Note where you build to block the ramp, and verify that dwarves do or dont get stuck up there.

Now remove the ramp and construct a stairway.  Figure out (if you have too, I did) how to make a constructed multi-z-level staircase extend upwards, then see how building around a stairway differs from ramps, so you know which one you like best.

Then come back to your actual game, armed with 'what the dwarves would already know'  8)

I was able to set up a desalinization plant, but I have a lot of alcohol so I haven't had to use the water yet. Right now it is mid-autumn of my second year, but I finished in it the summer.

I got a lot of fisherdwarves with my last wave, so I drafted most of them into the militia. I also was able to fill the sheriff, manager, and bookkeeper with some of my extra fisherdwarves.

 @mavj 96 Regarding walls

If you take a look at my pictures topside here you will see a ramp next to my bridge/gate. I use that to get up on the walls and roof over the area. I have found if I don't have access (for instance a ramp) I can't even designate constructions on top of the walls.

But when I use a floor to roof over an area I am careful to not put floors on walls that I intend to build walls on top of later. Because we can't build walls on top of constructed floors.

Just something to think about.

Good luck.

There's fresh water in one of the caverns. Don't tell the the other guys. I want them to fail. But not you. Not you. ;D

@waylon531
How in the Sam Kinison does that great big large huge expansive water thing work?

If you pump salt water or stagnant water it becomes fresh water. There is a windmill on the level above the pump, connected to a gear assembly. That gear assembly is connected to another gear assembly, so I can turn it off or on, and that is connected to the pump.

Also, there is a pressure plate beneath the lower pool to shut off the input from the ocean. It would be a good idea to put one in the upper pool too, I just forgot.

I thought the walls and floors had to be constructed, otherwise the water would go back to being salty.

Not that I have done it before, this is my first embark with salt water.

It will not work if salt water has touched the place you are pumping to. You do not need constructed floors or walls.

Beggining of Spring, 82

Right now I amunder a goblin siege, under attack by crundles, and there are albatross corpses hovering over my fortress. I managed to hit both the cavern layers with my water shaft to turn the magma into stone. I have had five more deaths. One was when one of my miners was digging a shaft straight down and fell into a lake in a cavern. Three others were from some crab corpses that attacked, and the last dwarf just dissapeared. I now a large quantity of animals, because my farms have been big enough to sustain my dwarves. I have a lot of cage traps set up along the main entrance, and I have lots of doors so I can trap invaders.

A giant earthworm attacked my fortress. It killed 6 of my dwarves that I had guarding the caverns before The rest of my military arrived and killed it.

Hello everyone. First off sorry for my absence as of late, I've been on a trip.

I've started anew and I underestimated a herd of 'Giant Boar Badger's and I was defeated yet again.

I will be restarting once more tonight and I will edit in this post some decent writing hopefully.

I will also update the OP with a bit of information for some folks :).

From the first chapter
OOC overview, Spring 82.

Still no military.  Haven't looked for or found the caverns yet.

The fort's mostly defensible, though it may take two more years to fully get the surface defenses where I want them.  Bad luck/great enemy positioning could easily break my fort, otherwise the thing's stable and safe.  That flock of albatross could have been a bad problem as they approached at a real bad time jobs-wise, but their angle was about the worst possible attack direction for them, so everything was fine on my dwarves end.

Two strange moods, a coffer and a figurine.  No dwarven deaths.  Only two deaths on the map.  It's eerie, apparently when the undead attack something out of my dwarves' line of sight, there's no mention of it in the combat logs.  The first I know of a corpse is wondering why someone's headed off towards the ocean... I look and there's a corpse.  Nothing around it.  So weird.  Place is haunted, but we knew that going in.

We've got plenty of food and more than enough plants to brew, just not enough barrels.  Wood and stone are both in shorter supply than I'd like, but that's just bottlenecked, not cut off.

@Imp

Awesome.

@waylon

How did you get so lucky to have the goblins start importing iron to you? I must be doing something wrong...

@mav

Dude. Giant badgers. Hopefully you don't get any Snakes...African Snakes.

@Metruption

Thanks for the explanation. Someday I'll have to try it.

---

A tiny "update". It takes a lot of RL time to manage 100 dwarves as you well know. Usually at this point I would have a screaming metal industry and a militia of 30 dwarves. But with the situation being what it is I am finding something for everyone to do.
  • Right now that looks like 22 miners (I requested picks last year) to toughen people up for the military.
  • I am about to milk my first animal ever. Shear my first animal ever.
  • While it may sound odd I just processed my first quarry bush leaves into bags...ever.
  • Next summer I will make my first rock nut paste.
And in all these things I have no concern for efficient fortress layout; which feels a little odd.

Thanks for the opportunity to explore aspects of the game I have never tried out.

I'm enjoying everyone's tales and am especially glad to see you are back, mavj!

Noticed an interesting thing happen a couple migrant waves back.  Someone arrived unhappy.  I spotted them first with dwarf therapist, that glaring red box in the middle of my migrants made me blink.

Once they actually got onto the map I could check their thoughts - attacked by undead and recently drafted was why they were so upset.  Alright.... I assumed that our OP had started and abandoned a save somewhere before uploading the map for use.  That could explain why a dwarf might arrive like this... for sure that didn't happen on my map, my combat log's still mostly empty and I certainly hadn't drafted any dwarves yet.  Of course, this HAD happened right at the end of that albatross scare, so.... maybe he drafted himself when an albatross attacked him?  I thought that unlikely and played on.

So now it's spring of 83, and more migrants come.  And another one is unhappy.  I don't think anything of it - until it's been a few weeks and I see an unhappy dwarf pass by.  That's odd to me, usually my dwarves cheer fast, the first one to come unhappy did too.  So I look

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More unhappy thoughts, this one's not only been attacked by undead and drafted 'recently', he's also had major injuries.

I don't have a hospital up yet (hadn't seen any need to yet, no one'd been fighting that I had any word of), so this really gets my attention.  Checking him for wounds, there's simply none, not on his medical history or on his wounds screen.  He doesn't have any scars either.

But I notice he has a kill.  One zombie drake (a male) in Diamondoiled.  Does that sound like a test fort of yours, mavj?

Hehe I did have a few men kill various undead in an evil volcanic biome, probably them. They witnessed death too.

Cool that they are showing up.

On a side note cot damn it, I have to restart AGAIN, an undead crab came by and killed everyone in my fort. One damned undead.

I'm getting pretty unlucky here.

Starting to get pretty old, another wave of undead RIGHT when I start comes to wipe out my fort as soon as I get anything dug out, I mean within the first 10-15 mins of play. Tired of restarting.

I shall persevere I suppose.

Alright boys I'm only going to try another time or two, I'm really sorry but I've had to restart another 4 times and each time undead immediately come to me before I can even get my supplies in a little dug out crevice.

I don't have the time to continue restarting like this, I don't know what in the hell it is, I've played on plenty of evil biomes so far and none have had undead crawling straight to my base every time like such.
