I'll start this later tonight. Just got back from college (which I'm given to understand is basically High School in Yank terms) and am just on my way out for a couple of unavoidable hours.

Start at the beginning...

15th Slate 81

Nothing of note until today.

We finished the tree farm and have given every dwarf their own room, bed, coffer and cabinet.
We have a training area set up for our massive army. Four dwarves in mismatched armor and weapons. At least it is all metal.
So far we have found sphalerite and gold. And that other metal. But I have a nagging suspicion I should leave it alone for the time being.
We also have a proper dining hall set up with enough chairs for half our number. I had Olinanil (the artifact millstone) constructed in the dining hall and almost every dwarf is now ecstatic. Which is good because we had some news today that sends a shiver up my spine...

I'm not sure what troubles me more, Ungngo's knobby trunk or his noxious secretions...

I started with the LNP embark, a breeding pair of dogs, and 2 hens and a rooster. Right when I embarked, some moon-snail men came, but I was able to get underground before they got near, I also managed to dig a moat around my wagon.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Right after that some Giant Thrips showed up and chased off the moon snails. Got a farm set up, some workshops, and started a water purification system.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is now summer.
23rd Hematite, 80
Zombie Albatrosses flew  in through my moat, killed one of my hens and my dogs before I was able to get everyone else to safety.

Start at the beginning...

25th Slate 81

Off in the distance I see some rough looking dwarves carrying everything they own. Good. A bigger labor force.

Something's not right though. They are coming in across the ice. Run! Before the ice melts!

I think they heard me because their shuffling gait picks up for a moment and then they slow down again. Poor bastards.

As they get closer I realize there are a lot more than I had expected, at least three score. Let's hope the ice melts before they all get here.

Crap. Another group of migrants is coming in from the west. Maybe I should just lock the gates and leave them all for the albatross corpses...

No wait. The new group isn't made up of dwarves, it's some kind of snail walking upright on legs. They look angry and are heading straight toward the dwarves. Excellent. They'll thin the herd for me.

The Moon Snail Men reach the first migrants and they scatter. The dwarves that is, and the Moon Snail Men give chase. If that's what you call it. They're moving pretty quickly I suppose, for snails.

Then out of the mist, a dwarf appears with a crossbow and with four bolts slays both Moon Snail Men. It looks like all the migrants will make it into the fort, but at least one of them will earn his keep.

The ocean melted and these guys showed up not three days later. Lucky migrants.

As they get closer I realize there are a lot more than I had expected, at least three score.

Three score would be... 3x20=60.

At least 60?

And your z screen shows a total of 64 dwarves.

You were down to less than 5 dwarves when those new ones came?  *shudders*\

I wanna hear that story too!

@Imp  Good catch.

I'm having a hard time focusing on DF/posting while having to repeatedly telling my students to read the written procedure for the task they are working on.

Them: "I just got done doing this. What do I do next?"
Me: "What does the procedure say?"
Them: "I don't know."
Me: "Read the procedure"
Them: "OK. I just got done with that step. What do I do next?"
Me: "What does the procedure say?"
Them: "I don't know."
Me: "Read the procedure."
Them: "OK. I'm doing step XX and it says to change this setting to XX. How do I do that?"
Me: "What does the procedure say?"
Them: "I don't know."
Me: "Read the procedure."

I'll stop before I start sounding like the crotchety old man that I am.

So i finally got time to get started as well! Here is my first report!

My choose for the embark:
Skills:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Items
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now our Fortress can start!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the group:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Go out there, become famous they said. Build a mighty fortress they said! But nobody told us we would get ambushed by goblins and lose all our supplies! We don't even have any plants we could plant! Now we have to settle here because if we don't we will starve! We need to get food in this terrifying Land!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As soon as our wagon stopped we see some undead albatross in the sky! We need to get underground as soon as possible or we won't survive here!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We made it underground and are save from the albatrosses!(We closed the entrance behind us no undead will come in now ... but also nobody comes out anymore) We even could get the wood from destroying our wagon before we went underground. With our pick we discovered an aquifer and got fresh water now as well. The only thing we are missing is food. These horses look really delicious though...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We finally found a spot without aquifer and started digging down. Hopefully we will find a cave wich has something to eat in it! Of course the first cave that we hid had only mud inside it! The situation is getting worse!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The hunger is starting to get worse! The only thing which we could eat are these hamsters running around all over the place... or we could eat one of these horses .. I mean they can't graze and are dyeing anyway soon or later... come to me horse!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seems like the albatrosses are gone. We can hear something different though, doesn't sound better!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's a great day. That horse got rid of our hunger and we should hit the next layer of caverns soon! Everything is running better then expected!

Today we hit the next layer of caves! It actually has plants and mushrooms inside! But sadly its guarded by Crundles... we cant go inside there so our hope for plump helmets and wood is lost...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As soon as the rain stopped we heard something from the outside of our walled of entrance! They were actually people outside there. We took down the wall and let them in. It were only two men and two children ... why they came outside here in this terrifying Land? We don't know and they never talked about it..
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We can't believe it! In our cave some plump helmets decided to grow! Now we even got farms going ... and it was about time, the food we got from the horse was almost out!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The small cave we housed in got expanded in the last weeks so more plants could grow and our remaining horse actually could have something to graze on!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More migrants! Why would they come here? Something bad must happened to their home...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even a caravan from the mountain homes arrived! We must be very lucky.. even though we don't have anything to trade.. we haven't even started making some goods yet! But we ordered more seeds, some cats against the vermin and a pick! Hopefully we can get some goods when they come back next year so we can actually trade!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A part of our cave was different.. I knew it but they didn't listen... Don't store corpses there its bad I said but they didn't listen... Yesterday they it happened! The Osprey Corpse came back to life! It had that glow in the eyes I'll never forget his gaze! Luckily our miner was there and just ripped it apart with her steel pick!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest of the year was pretty quiet.. We expanded our cave and even started some Fortifications on the surface..
Here is a quick overview of our Fortress:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's the end of my first report! Hope the next year will bring us time to get the Fortifications up and running. Furthermore I hope we can get enough goods to trade with the next caravan!

Quite fun to read though.  You're a brave, calm overseer with a fine writing style.  :D

As per metals I usually only mention big veins or veins of weapon metal regardless of size. Smaller non weapon metals are ignored by my searches.
