Question about medicine and unholy snot rain
« on: November 05, 2012, 10:54:37 am »

So I embarked on a half evil map thinking it would be a ripping good time and to my surprise, the second I unpause I get a weather alert telling me it's raining "blistering mucus". Needless to say that's disgusting and hilarious but it also seems to, unsurprisingly, cause a syndrome. Nothing too bad mind you, fever and nausea. My question is this: once I get a hospital set up will mydoctors be able to do anything about treating it or do I just need to let it wear off?

I don't think doctors will treat syndromes. They seem to only deal with physical injuries and rots. They'll probably check your dwarves up if they get physically hurt. Some syndromes don't wears off, or have nasty aftereffect loooong after.

Might be worth considering setting up a small hospital with well somewhere out of the way with a doctor that don't have hauling jobs if you're worried :D

Only kind words and false promises will help them with most syndromes.

I embarked in a similar terrain, with horrendous goo or something. Anyway, when I set up a hospital and appointed a doctor, almost every dwarf who had been outside in the past week or so canceled their jobs and stood around the hospital. End result was that I undesignated the hospital. I'm not sure if that happens with every syndrome, or if it was because my syndrome caused vomiting, but I don't think that I set a hospital back up until dwarves could reliably get pretty much anything without going outside.

It was funny watching the merchants though.

Only in mods do doctors actually do anything worth being a noble for. Applying splints, bandages and cleaning wounds are important, but thats not why you study years before becoming a doctor. Aside from that they dont really do anything and to top it off most dwarves are shit at doing whats needed to keep them alive on time. Finding a doctor who cares for ofter people and does whats first on his mind is actually pretty important.

What Keb is saying here is that it is more important to appoint as your Chief Medical Dwarf an individual with good social skills than one with good medical skills.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

For a dwarf, becoming a doctor is more along the lines of "Crap, Urist McSoldier got his leg chopped off.  We need a doctor.  You there.  You aren't doing anything useful.  You're it."
