Main problem with the band is... we all gotta start free and I gotta make friends with your characters, hoping ya'll don't move away or something before I pick all of ya up.
You can set all created officers to be in a band (I.e. force without any cities) before you start the game.

If you REALLY want to start as a free character; I believe you can get around that by making all the created characters the sons/daughters of your main character even if he/she is age argleblargleblarge. Recruiting sons/daughters is almost certainly guaranteed success.

As for a starting city, I really want Jiang Xia. It's got pretty lousy resources, but has access to a Bow Garrison at city level M and a foundry at L. You can start building up an army of omgwtfpwnzorzevery1 Marksmen fairly quickly. Plus, it's near the central plains so there's plenty of space to expand to.

Can we start as a rowing band of mercenaries? Taking over cities as we go and abandoning them once we have all their money and our units upgraded and refiled with new recruits?
Yes and No.

As a free officer, you can recruit a personal unit and attack cities with it but...
1. Recruiting costs money.
2. Personal units have upkeep (Unless the character has the skill Hero).
3. Fighting as a free officer limits you to 1 unit of up to 10,000.
4. While fighting, you have to keep your troops supplied (Which is converted at a 1:1 gold:supply ratio, yeowch.)
5. You get nothing from taking cities as a free officer.
6. Losing at all means you lose your unit (And risk being captured), and there's a 30 day limit to a battle after which the defender wins.

As a band you automatically take over any city you defeat (And you can withdraw supplies/gold too) but...
1. Abandoning costs you a ton of fame (I think I've lost 250 fame from it).
2. Your officers may choose not to follow you.
3. You're limited to one unit (Of up to 10,000) per officer.
4. Losing means your band is automatically disbanded.

Is what I have been doing in my latest game. I got heaps of money from all the cities I take, and since I can move around freely I can attack whatever weak city I please. But I was wondering why my fame kept staying so low, I guess I should reconsider abadoning as I go. I managed to recruit that angry looking dude with amazing stats and weapons. I pilfered his items (that +8 weapon had something like 35 loyality on it) and gave him a big heap of booze instead, so he is still perfectly loyal.  :P

Still, anyone know how to deal with all the appeals? I am constantly swamped in them and it seems to ruin the safety of the city, but I don't always have time to waste 10 times x number of appeals.

Oh, and there is no fully translated version of the game? My install and translation mod only translate the buttons, I have no idea what any character is saying ever.  :-\

The absolute best way to make tons of money is to join a faction, become a prefect, empty the coffers, quit the faction, then repeat with another faction.  Unlike new cities, ones that have been with a faction for a while have far more gold (like ten times as much).  Also, the AI tends to chose the best candidate for the prefect job (while also favoring those friendly with the AI ruler), so is more than willing to replace an existing prefect with the player.

Also, leaving a faction, even as the prefect, has much less of an impact on your fame than abandoning a city and becoming a band/free officer from being a liege.

The key to joining factions with enough rank to become prefect is to acquire high fame before joining a faction.  At maximum starting fame, you just barely qualify for a job as a prefect at whatever faction you join.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I've just gone back to playing the game on my PS3.

Use imgur.com

Its easy to use; just drag the folder into the browser and it will automatically upload. Very convenient.

Sorry to interrupt the flow of things, but I got the chance to see 三国志12 (Sangokushi 12, or Romance of the Three Kingdoms 12) at the Tokyo Game show on the Wii-U.  It was alright, but my love for the series made me try to find an English conversion.  Is RotTK10 legit in English, or do I need to find translations were I to purchase it?

A fully translated Rot3K X can be easily found for the PS2, but you're not going to find a legit PC version without some browsing of foreign (And somewhat questionable) sites; and even then there's no *full* English patch in circulation.

...  I have a backlog of pictures, still procrastinating on the uploading part.

kongming.net is the go to place for patches and probably the best place overall for RoTK updates, not that there is anything worth updating right now.  It is one of the focal gathering points for fans of the Three Kingdoms...

And yes, the PS2 version.  In the end, I decided to go back to that, cause there is no full engrish patch of the pc version.

That's sad. I have the English version of RoTK IX floating around on my HD somewhere.

Is the non-English version Japanese only?

You really have a PC version that is English?  What magical world did you get it from?  Seriously?
I've spent long hours looking for it... and RoTK X also...  that was back when these games came out too.

Then I realize that IX is not what I'm playing now... and its one of those you can only be a ruler versions.  VII and VIII are the alternate play as an officer games if I remember correctly.  Or was it just VIII?  Meh, I'll look it up later if I really needwant to.

As for an update, brother has borrowed the computer with all my ps2/rotk stuff on it, so umm... back to procrastinating.

VII and VIII had the "play any officer" modes, along with X.
