How does the combat pan out? Would it be at the same time, like if a ship with 4 FPW 1PLT 0ARM attacked a ship with 1FPW 4PLT 0ARM, would they both die?

For now you'll just be whatever you want. Future games [if this one works out alright] May have specific races. Maybe each race would start with different numbers of materials? Maybe it's just for fun. No idea yet. For now though you're whatever you want.

Each ship attacks in the same turn but the attacker goes fire. In the scenario you describe the defending ship would die so it would get no attack.
