The trick is to wait for someone else to reply and then leave it in the "Show new replies to your posts" by only going to the first post.

Why is remembering the channel name not an option? It's not too hard to remember.
But, I'm gonna agree with Japa, HexChat is pretty excellent.

Well, I'd been using the built-in Opera client because I was too lazy to look up an alternative to Xchat, and kept forgetting how to make the URL.

Xchat is pretty great though, and HexChat seems exactly as great.

MIRC has been the most stable on my more than useless lappy - the "trial has expired" screen doesnt affect how long it takes to start up thanks to the horrible grinding slowness of the machine.

Hexchat is literally just a newer version of Xchat-WDK. they changed the name when they made the decision to release for linux and mac as well.
