Question about walls and how they work.
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:18:34 pm »

Hello everyone at the Bay12Forums I have a question that I don't know where to ask.

I am building some walls for my fort on uneven terrain and my question is is when I build a wall do I have to overlap over the lower Z level than drop down to continue building the wall or can I go right up to the edge of the current Z level with the wall and than just start a new wall on the lower Z level.

If you understand what I mean if not I'll come back with pictures. My only concern is if I don't overlap over the lower Z level that they may be able to get in somehow without going across the bridge.

There've been reports of flying creatures being able to go through Z corners. Not sure if it's with or without flooring off the level, I believe not since top of wall makes for fine enough floor.

You can build walls on any Z order you want, as long as it's supported somewhere. Bridge don't counts as a real support, even if it let you build off it :D

In practice, all you really need to do is wall off the ground, until a flying creature or forgotten beast shows up and accidentally finds their way over it.

Hah, alright so I guess I should just stick with a trial and error method than is there any way to protect against building destroyers?

Seal the whole place up, bridges are useful in sealing things up and doesn't get destroyed as far as I could find.

Well, dragon fire and HFS critters might be hot enough to break even bluemetal bridges, but I've no experience in that.

To answer your question, yes. Creatures can move diagonally, so if you don't overlap your walls between z levels, they'll run onto your walls and pepper your dorfs with a hail of bolts or arrows.

Yup.  There is a trap specifically designed for building destroyers.
