Fell moods give legendary medical skill
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:08:30 am »

It would be awesome, if the very rare fell mood gave a dwarf legendary status in either surgery, bone setting or suturing. Diagnosis and dress wounds would make less sense, but it'd still be allright to include those to the list.

Medicine is different then butchering which is different from hacking people into peices and using those pieces for art.

Medicine is quite different then that.

I mean why not give Butchers automatic surgery skills while you are at it?

Ok look...

There are forums for jokes and where you can say something completely serious even when what you are saying is actually a joke.

The Suggestion forum really isn't one of these places. There shouldn't be joke suggestions or comments.

Are you serious?

Wouldn't a butcher have a better chance than most untrained people at surgery? Not compared to say a trained doctor, but a butcher would beat a metalsmith in having a vague idea of how bodies work. Your legendary butcher isn't going to be good as a proficient surgeon, but still better than a miner or something.

They would have knife skill and the ability to pick appart tissues.

However that isn't surgery skills that is the ability to use a knife and the ability to recognise tissues.

Better supported by the perception and dexterity attribute (or cross skills). Then a weird floating surgery skill.

Most anatomical knowledge, which forms the basis for lots of our western medicine, was gained through centuries of cutting open corpses and looking at what's inside.
It makes no less sense for a dwarf that gets a fell mood to gain legendary skill in a medical profession, than it makes sense for a dwarf to become a legendary stonecrafter as a toddler, for putting a boulder on a stick. I'd say gaining it from butchering animals makes less sense. At least my suggestion is limited to the rare fell mood.

Also, +1 to Drunkenstein

I am aware Martinuzz, the issue is that Butchering tends to focus a lot less on understanding.

Ignoring that Frankenstein's methods were more alchemical, the moody dwarf would be Frankebdwarf. And I think it'd be more like Urist McFrankenstein. Etymology aside...

Back in medieval times, surgical knowledge was kinda nonexistent. Barbers would function as surgeons due to their possession of sharp blades.

Sure, butchers are more used to live results being bad, but they can extract brains while leaving an intact skull and avoid contamination of intestines so they're edible. There's overlap.

And if a dwarf gets medical skills from the ordeal, it should result in the artifact being a still-living dwarf refashioned into a tool...

I agree with wyrm. Besides, Medieval surgery, when it was successful, relied more on intuition then practical knowledge, which you could definitely get doing butchery. To quote my favorite poet; "to butcher is to ruin, but a butcher is an artist." being able to make a clean cut counts for a lot if you want the thing to heal.

Never filleted a fish or broken down a chicken? You need to be able to tell the tissues apart to make your cuts in the right place, and if your knife is at all sharp you need to be able to keep the edge and point away from any flesh you don't want sliced or jabbed.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
