The hobgoblin merchants have left today. For some reason the Vamari still remain. I begin to worry if they will become feral and attack us. Their guards are well armed and armored and may be able to kill some of our militia. Luckily there are still the cage traps between us and them.

Granite 24, 128
The new traps in the cavern have proven successful. We have caught a number of sugar beetles. Ramsey will now be happy to have some more meat to cook and we will now be able to breed the animal again. We were given a pair of them when we embarked for Boltaura but the female was struck down by a thief early on. The meat of the beetle itself is both delicious and valuable. This will prove a fine asset indeed.

Granite 25, 128
I need to extend the trap corridor in the caverns. The sugar beetles had filled all five traps and allowed a giant toad to pass through and harass the mechanics replacing the cages. I know Brewster will be in my office about this very soon. I guess I’ll have to give him this one.

Granite 26, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Neo has made short work of the toad. This means more meat for Ramsey’s cooking but I still need to capture some of these toads. Trained they would make a decent war animal. They might not be the strongest but unleashing a horde of them upon our enemies will be a good distraction technique at the least.

Granite 27, 128
Allied reinforcements have arrived. Thirty one migrants have travelled to Boltaura this season. That’s our biggest wave yet. Boltaura now stands at one hundred and eighteen citizens. The wave was made up of nineteen adults and twelve children. Several of the migrants have dodging, armor, and shield skills but no weapon skills. I’ve had a full second squad drafted from this wave and I’ve set the rest to supplement our low number of haulers. Neo seems quite pleased to be in command over his own men. If we continue to attract migrants like this Kale will have his own very soon.

Slate 3, 128
A mechanic's kitten has been found dead in the caverns. It was the same kitten that was being used as bait. Needless to say the mechanic was rather angry at me. She barged into my office demanding to know what happened to her pet. I used the excuse that it had gone into the caverns in search of vermin to hunt. Then she asked how that would be possible since the kitten was found tied to a stationary rope. I then blamed it on a ghost. I think she bought it. A problem has arisen however; we need to find a kitten replacement. Seeing as there are none left I will have to use a stray puppy. We’ve had several of them running around since we got here and none of them have an owner. We need to catch more of these creatures to make up for the failure of the yeti. While the yeti has been trained for war it still lacks a mate and as such isn’t exactly useful by itself.

Edit: I thought you would also like to know that your skill in cooking is actually master.

OOC: Perfect. IRL, Gordon Ramsay is tied number 2 on the list of world's chefs with most Michelin Stars, with 12. That's like 12 Oscars or Grammys in the cooking world, if you didn't know.

Finally! Meat! Granted, giant toad and beetle is no reindeer or moose, but it'll do in this ice pit.

Slate 6, 128
I’m no stranger to strange sights in this fortress but the one I saw today left me speechless. I had gone to the kitchen to grab some of Ramsey’s fine roasts but as I entered I saw something quite odd. Instead of cooking Ramsey was singing. On top of that he was singing in gibberish. I could only make out the words “Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue, Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork!” I had no idea how to react to such a thing. I had no idea what was wrong with him so I left. I told the doctors to help him as he seemed to have gone insane. I would have helped but I have too many things to do like count my gems.

Slate 8, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Today Fishy and the smiths were staring at me like I was crazy. I had ordered them to craft some shields for the next caravan. It’s like they think I’ve gone corrupt for requesting three shields. They’ve all been making armor under my orders since we arrived. Never before has it been a problem.

Slate 9, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!? We’ve been attacked by a forgotten beast of lore. The legends told its name is Ena the Lobster of Swimming. I don’t know why they call it a lobster it’s clearly a scorpion. I saw it with my own eyes. I’ve called all citizens inside and I’ve ordered the militia to wait for it at the tombs. We must destroy this creature. I fear Neo’s squad may suffer heavy casualties. The majority of them aren’t full armored but they are armed and we need all the soldiers we can get to hold this beast back.

Slate 15, 128
The beast has done nothing but wander around the cavern lakes. I’ve ordered the men to the shore to try and draw it out but it is not giving chase. We need to figure out how engage it so that we may slay it. The legends have no stories of how these forgotten beasts have fallen before. I guess we will have to rely on dwarven steel to protect us this day.

Slate 16, 128
Ena seems to be isolating itself in the southern parts of the caverns. I’ve allowed citizens to return to their jobs but I’m going to keep the military stationed and watch its movements carefully. If it moves too close I will raise the alarm again. We cannot risk this beast massacring our citizens. This has also given me thought to create some sort of impenetrable inner fortress within our current one. Somewhere we can stash food, drink, and a few dwarves should any threat breach our defenses.

Felsite 7, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The beast has been engaged! The militia has been able to ambush while it was resting. Now all that’s left is to slay this beast and end its reign of terror.

Felsite 8, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
THE BEAST HAS BEEN SLAIN! GLORY TO THE DWARVES! GLORY TO BOLTAURA! The great forgotten beast Ena has been struck down by the dwarf Urist Tobulamith. Unfortunately the fight was not without loss. Erib Zasitatol was slain by the beast. It was as I thought, one of Neo’s men. The beast severed his arm and then proceeded to strangle the stunned dwarf to death. I’ve ordered his remains to be placed within the first of the soldier’s tombs. For his great sacrifice he has earned his rest. Fortunately no one else was injured during the fight. As the beast fought with Erib the other soldiers were free to strike him unmercifully.

Felsite 12, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Cursed Bugbears! They’re back to try and take our fortress again. The majority of them have bows or crossbows as well. I can’t in my right mind send Neo’s squad out to meet them. I will have to position our forces in the halls of the military levels. We will make them come to us. The Vamari still sit in our depots as well. Maybe they can slow the Bugbears down and give us time to prepare.

Felsite 17, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We have pushed them back and out of the depot. The majority of their bowmen are either dead or caged. So far we have suffered one casualty. One of our better soldiers as well. She rushed out alone to meet the enemy squad head on and as a result was shot in the head and killed. Another one of the soldiers has suffered a broken upper spine. I cannot tell for sure if he will survive his injury. The Vamari proved to be mostly useless. Two of their guards managed to slay some of the Bugbear’s war leopards but then proceeded to chase them west while they’re merchants were slaughtered by the bowmen advancing from the east. The militia now needs to continue to push the Bugbears back to the north until they route.

Felsite 19, 128
The bugbears have been pushed back but we have suffered heavy casualties. Including the dwarf listed before four soldiers have fallen. Several others are now hospitalized with severe wounds. Kale was uninjured, Neo suffered a torn open right upper arm, and Vinzenz suffered a broken right arm, left arm, right elbow, left leg, and right leg. Now all that remain of the enemies are a few of their war animals that refuse to relent and end the siege. They do not wish to engage us either. They just continue to run from our remaining soldiers.

Hematite 7, 128
I’ve given the fortress guard crossbows and have ordered them to hunt down the remaining war birds of the Bugbears. Our soldiers are not agile enough to catch them and when they get anywhere close the birds take flight out of reach. We need to slay the rest of them. If we cannot break their siege we cannot receive migrants or caravans.

Hematite 10, 128
The last of the birds have been slain. The siege has been broken. Boltaura lives on for another day. I’ve drafted another few haulers to fill the gaps in the squads. We’re back up to twenty soldiers. Many of our best now lay in the hospital being tended to by doctors. I’ve put in more smithing orders for armaments. I’ll be recruiting another squad hopefully with the next migrant wave.

I appear to have gone insane. Is this asin "stark raving mad" insane or just something you pulled out of your nether regions? If it's "stark raving mad" just assign me another cook named the same. Plot reason being he isn't insane anymore.

Journal of Ramsey (no stealth pun for now)

They killed a forgotten beast! I hope that they didn't just leave it's corpse to rot. A beast like that could have fed us for months!

Look in the health screen. If the summary says I have impaired grasp, it probably means that I took motor nerve damage in the arm.

Malachite 4, 128
Summer is proving uneventful after the siege. We are still cleaning up the mess left behind. I’ve also been informed that the corpse of the forgotten one was allowed to rot instead of being butchered. Ramsey was rather upset at this. I blame the butcher for wasting valuable not doing his damn job when he needed to be butchering animals instead of letting the potential food go to waste.

Malachite 7, 128
A child has been stricken by a mood. He claimed Cogs’s workshop for his own and threw Cogs out. The child is now screaming for yarn cloth of which we have none. I have yet to see what happens when the crazed individuals fail to finish their artifact. I suppose he’ll just stand there screaming for the cloth until he dies of dehydration.

Malachite 16, 128
More migrants have arrived. This time we have received a much smaller wave of ten. I had hoped for more but I will take what I can get. I’ve enlisted all of them and I’ve placed Kale in charge of the new squad. Fishy’s current work will ensure they at least have swords to train with at this time. I will see that their armor is completed soon. The majority of our casualties so far have been because a lack of armor on our soldiers.

Galena 13, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Two caravans have arrived at once! I still don’t understand why the Xelic’s are sending caravans. We’ve murdered every caravan they’ve sent and yet each year they send one bigger than the last. Oh well. I’ve ordered more goods to the depot so that we may trade. I’m very interested to see the Human caravan’s goods. They’ve always been a solid trading partner for the dwarves. They normally bring bring well-made weapons, a ton of food, and lots of booze.

Galena 14, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We’ve been besieged by the nefarious Chaos Dwarves. They were once dwarves like us but have been corrupted by the demons of lore. Luckily they’re numbers are few and they lack any ranged weaponry. I’ve ordered the militia to engage them. Normally I would use the merchants as padding but I do not wish to lose the human caravan.

Galena 21, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The plan of protecting the merchants has failed horribly. Our militia did not get to the surface in time to prevent the slaughter. It would also seem that our mechanics do nothing around the fortress. They’ve had months and plenty of empty cages but only a few of our entrance traps have been reloaded. Without the traps the Chaos Dwarves march into our military level where the militia awaits them.

Galena 23, 128
The siege has been broken. We’ve lost another two soldiers. The chaos dwarves proved to have better equipment than our militia and stood a fair fight. It also doesn’t help that the majority of the militia is untrained and those that are trained are the ones dying in battle.

Galena 24, 128
Vinzenz and another recruit have been found dead in the hospital. It seems regardless of having doctors and nurses with no other duties still do not ensure the wounded are fed or given water. I do wonder what the point of a hospital is if no one bothers to pay attention to those in need of care. It has also been brought to my attention that the child who took Cogs’s workshop in the previous month has gone insane. He now wanders the halls speaking in odd tongues and refuses any food or water. Cogs has resumed his work like nothing happened.

Galena 25, 128
After the battle it seems Kale has proven himself to have a name of legends. From now on he shall be known as Kale Judgepage Distincthurricane Insight. Yet another soldier has been found dead at the depot. I need to figure out a way to strengthen our militia. They need better training and better equipment but I’m not sure how to make progress in either direction. The Chaos Dwarves used many metals we do not have the resources for. The only thing I can think of is to attempt to search for the fabled Adamantine.
