I claim Melbil, the swordsdwarf.
Do you mind changing his name Kale?

Moonstone 8, 126
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A yeti has been spotted nearing the entrance. I've sent the order for the militia to assemble at once. We cannot allow this threat to continue gallivanting across our lands. He must be dealt with.

Moonstone 21, 126

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The yeti has been struck down. The newest recruit Kale managed to slay the beast on his own without being injured. He had only a sword, shield and coif equipped. The merchants left weeks ago but the liaison finally left today. He would not stop going on and on about trade and politics. The only productive thing he's done was to help establish the export agreement. They want some strange things next year and I can only guess as to why. With how long he stayed I wonder if he is actually one of the king's spies. I will have to ask the others about what he was doing during his stay here. I'm just glad he is gone for now but I know he will return next year.

Neo scares me. I knew he liked swords but damn. I'm half expecting him to grow a hundred arms to wield each one like a creature of legend. I can only wonder if he has named all of them and has different conversations with each one.

Leading this fortress has become rather dull so I have decided to take up a new hobby. Since Saegge and his crew of miners have been mining so much we have gems everywhere. Due to this I am now taking up the trade of a jeweler. Cutting these gems and encrusting objects with them should bring us great wealth. Plus I can use them to decorate my offices.

Are you going to butcher the yeti?
They give great returns.

I might have forgotten him by the time he rotted.

Obsidian 14, 126
Kale succeeded in slaying another yeti. I will not repeat my mistake of letting the corpse go to waste like last time. I'll even have the skull posted by our entrance as a warning to the rest of the yetis.

Obsidian 18, 126
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I thought thieves were supposed to be stealthy? An alarm cry was called for a snatcher. Five minutes later another and another. So far we have five would be thieves in cages. I must think of a use for them. Maybe string them up as an example? What about using them as live training practice for the militia? The end of the year is almost upon us. I can't believe we've been in this glacier for almost a year. Time seems to fly. I'll have to write up a report on the fortress once spring comes.

Obsidian 20, 126
It seems Saegge has attained legendary status as a miner. This feat has given me an idea. I will have a statue created of each dwarf in the fortress that attains a legendary status in their profession. These will then be used to create an awe inspiring statue garden. I will set about designing the garden right away.

Well I have been walking around with a sword for far to long now. It's an undwarfly weapon! I must forge myself a hammer! I will not be seen with a pointy flatend stick!

OCC: Could you make Fishybang a warhammer please? Preferably made from silver if we have got it.

I continue to watch Reaver's progress. The helmethead forgot to order the yeti to be butchered. I would have order it myself if I was above ground. I asked Reaver today if I could place some traps around the cavern, so I could capture and train a few animals, he said he'd think about it. I hope if I can bring value to the fortress Reaver will make me his second hand.

I was able to speak with the liaison before he left. I informed him of the going-ons so he could inform the king. I told him of the odd faces and comments Reaver made on the ride here when he realized we're in a tundra. The king would be wise to keep guard if to come here.

Kale's personal journal.

Moonstone 21, 156.
I can understand defending the fortress. I cannot understand however why I had to fight a Yeti by myself.
Perhaps it's a "Earn your keep" thing, that they do to every new military dwarf.
I fought it armed with a tower shield, a longsword, and a coif. I had to take off my clothes before I fought it.
When I asked why, I was told, "It's easier to reclaim your clothes that way." Fighting in the cold wearing only a helm. Yay...
They were surprised, when I came back alive. (I bet they were planning on leaving my corpse out there.)

Moonstone 26, 156
When I was training today, I noticed something strange. Neo was wielding 3 longswords.
1 in his left-hand, and 2 in his right. Did I mention he was carrying a Tower shield in his right hand?
The guy is weird. I really hope this improves his combat performance.

Moonstone 29, 156
I went to Reaver, and asked him if he planned on butchering the yeti.
He told me, "I forgot about it, and it probably rotted by now."
There goes some perfectly good meat.

Obsidian 14, 126
I killed another yeti. This time, Reaver took my advice,
and had the yeti butchered. He even had the skull posted near the entrance.
To warn the rest of the yetis to not come near. (I find that a bit strange, and morbid.)

Note : This is my first time trying something in-character.

Obsidian 24, 126
During my monthly meeting with the militia Fishy barged into my office demanding a warhammer for protection. During her rant I feel she made a grave mistake. The moment she said that swords were a glorified stick and were undwarfy Neo shot her a glance that chilled me to my very core. As she was closing the door on her way out she threw the sword aside. Before it even hit the ground it was strapped to Neo's back. I suppose it is the best place for it. During the meeting Vinzenz informed me that the liaison had spent a fair amount of time with Brewster. It's probably nothing but if shady dealings start to happen I will have to investigate this. Brewster also requested again to place traps in the cavern. I told him the same response as always: It will be taken care of after we finish trapping the entrance. I too am interested in what dwells below but we must protect ourselves first. We are here for the long haul after all and it will be done in time. I also look the possibility of using these yetis as beasts of war with a much greater hope than that of using cave crocodiles or giant toads.

Granite 1, 127
It is official: We have survived an entire year in a glacier. I am both amazed and pleased that we have made it this far. When we first arrived I thought I would have froze within a week. Now we continue to make progress on a weekly basis. Since it has been a year I have decided to document the fortress as it is and detail what the future plans are.

Spoiler: Entrance (click to show/hide)
So far the north entrance is in operation. I will have the others finished at a later date. Each entrance will eventually be trapped with cage and stone fall traps. As for right now just some cleaning and organization needs to be done.

Spoiler: Military Level (click to show/hide)
Another excessive layer. Four barracks connected to the halls each with their own armor and weapon storages off of them. As we only a small militia only one is needed for now. There is a large room for refuse storage to the north.

Spoiler: Crafting Level (click to show/hide)
Each shop has a designated room with room behind it for storage of its specific good. To the north we will have a larger general purpose storage area for all goods. I have had the rooms to the south designated but the miners won't begin until they are necessary.

Spoiler: Smithing Level (click to show/hide)
A large system of rooms with plenty of space for any and all forges and smelters. We also have large areas for storing ores, coal, and bars at the end of the halls.

Spoiler: Hospital/Garden (click to show/hide)
The hospital lies to the north and the grounds of the statue garden to the south. Construction has yet to begin on either. As soon as more living spaces are dug I will make the hospital the next priority.

Spoiler: Royal Quarters (click to show/hide)
The rooms of the future nobles have been dug. Smoothing and engraving has yet to start on all rooms except mine. My room has also been decorated as well and I quite like the result. Now I just need to improve my skill and setting gems and I can encrust all of my possessions.

Spoiler: Kitchen/Dining (click to show/hide)
Two large kitchens on either side with a hall leading north to the grand dining room. Beside the dining room are storage areas for food and drink. Below the kitchens will be the area for the kennels and rooms to contain any of our non grazing food or war animals.

Spoiler: Housing Level (click to show/hide)
All dwarves are assigned one by three rooms with a door, bed, chest and cabinet. Outfitting the rooms with the rest of the items is in progress as of now.

Spoiler: Tomb Level (click to show/hide)
To the north is the passage to the caverns and to the south is my grand tomb. Further south of that will be the coffins for the mass peasants. To each side are rows of tombs each to be assigned to a soldier. The military protects us all and as such deserves a fit place to rest

Spoiler: Cavern (click to show/hide)
A few farms have been set up for cave bulbs, plump helmets, pig tails, and web lichen. Fishy's fish house continues sit in the middle of the lake. Future goals for the caverns include caging some animals for war, food, or profit and digging down to find lower caverns.

Spoiler: Citizens (click to show/hide)
We are growing slowly but steadily. There are still far to many dwarves that I do not know the names of.

Spoiler: Overview (click to show/hide)
A general overview of the fortress at this time. It's not a whole lot but it is a start. I wonder how it will grow by next year.

OOC: There are still a ton of unnamed dwarves. Anyone is welcome to claim one and give him a name/story/persona/whatever. I'll play along. Also, does anyone know of a fix for Dwarf Therapist still showing kidnapped children?
