He's not opposed to other dwarves making it into the vault. He only has the standpoint "If they don't make it in before me they weren't fast enough." Its like the dwarven natural selection.

I assume the Military is going to make a valiant last stand in Reaver's bedroom?

The bunker is for after the military and the hastily armed citizen militia recruited to replace it are all dead. Its purely for any true "Oh Shit" moment.

Obsidian 14, 128
A Hobgoblin caravan has arrived. As usual I’ve ordered more goods to the depot. The Hobgoblins have been friendly so far and trading with them has been helpful. I just hope they weren’t followed by creatures that aren’t as friendly.

Obsidian 15, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another caravan was spotted, this one sent by a Dyansauri Empire. They’re a race that looks to be a combination of human and reptile. Supposedly they’re excellent hunters. Perhaps they have brought meat that Ramsey will consider worthy of his skill. More goods have been ordered to the depot, we can’t let our friends leave empty handed.

Obsidian 16, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Either our spotters have gone mad or we are incredibly lucky. A third caravan has been spotted today. A caravan sent by the Frost Giants. They live in the coldest regions of the world and are more than ten times the size of a dwarf. I will have to choose my words carefully and offer them a favorable deal. A war with their race would prove devastating to our own.

Obsidian 18, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What the hell. As the Frost Giants drew closer to the depot the Hobgoblin guards attacked them. To make matters worse as the Hobgoblin chased the merchant they ran straight into a Chaos Dwarf ambush. I’m just going to order everyone inside and order the militia to defend the entrance halls. If the merchants want to start killing each other they can deal with the ambushers.

Obsidian 20, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
One of the Hobgoblin guards managed to single handedly kill one of the Frost Giant merchants and two of his guards. However the other Hobgoblin proved to be nothing more than a pincushion for the Chaos Dwarf bowdwarves.

Obsidian 21, 128
It would appear that the hostile bowdwarves are staying back instead of assaulting the depot. Reports that before the Hobgoblin mace man fell he managed to break the leader’s foot slowing down his advance. With their leader injured the others dare not attack without him. I may have to order the militia to engage them outside. I will wait a little while longer before sending them though.

Obsidian 23, 128
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As the Chaos Dwarves approached the depot from the Southwest another squad of their cursed bowdwarves ambushed from the Northwest. Luckily the combined forces of the Dyansauri and the Hobgoblins managed to dispatch the bowdwarves. I do not know if they will be able to defeat the second squad though. Several of the guards received broken bones in their fight and may not be able to make it to the fresh bowmen before being shot fatally.

Obsidian 26, 128
The caravan guards managed to route the remaining bowdwarves. After they killed their leader the Chaos Dwarves simply turned and ran. They didn’t even attempt to fight the badly wounded guards. With their removal I’ve ordered the citizens to clean up the inventories of the dead Frost Giant merchants. Being massive creatures they have powerful weaponry that would be used well in a trap.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We are now in the fourth year since we arrived at Boltaura. The last year has been a bloody one. We’ve lost several soldiers to ambushes and even one to a forgotten beast but Boltaura has persevered. I’ve included charts on the citizens and the current state of the fortress. I feel sketching the layout of the fortress this year would be redundant. The only addition was the bunker and that has already been heavily documented. We have continued to grow economically increasing our value threefold and the citizen count is forty higher than it was last year. However, we have had troubles staying above one hundred and twenty citizens. Every time we seem to break that number it is then reduced by a siege or an ambush. If we are to ever have the king inspect our fortress we must help that number grow and stop it from falling. The Adamantine we have harvest this year will help our military to cut down the enemy faster and shrug off more grievous wounds that they could not otherwise survive.

Granite 16, 129
God dammit. We have another vampire in the fortress. Luckily it was a hauler found drained of his blood and not a more useful dwarf. I’ve assigned the guards to hunt down this beast. Card may have the opportunity to use his hammer soon.

Granite 17, 129
The vampire has been arrested and has been sentenced to four hundred and one days in prison. A witness who saw her committing the foul act has come forward and provided the evidence that allowed us to arrest the fiend. This is not good. Vampires need no food or water so she can sit in prison forever and nothing will change. The second she is released she will kill another citizen. Why the guards gave her a prison sentence instead of an execution is beyond me. Nevertheless Card will be greatly disappointed. He was looking forward to being able to strike a criminal down.

Granite 23, 129
Production of Adamantine weapons is now in full effect. By the end of this year I will make sure that our entire military is fully armed and armored in Adamantine. Fishy seems to be extremely happy to finally be able to work with the revered metal. She must make sure to take the upmost care with it. We need the highest quality armor that can be made.

Slate 9, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Somehow a giant ant queen had made it into the fortress. I ordered the militia to slay the beast and they succeeded without any incidents. I don’t understand how it managed to get in undetected. There are dwarves everywhere in the caverns but no one bothered to notice the giant ant going up the stairs. It’s no wonder the citizens keep dying.

Slate 10, 129
More migrants have arrived today. This time it is an insulting wave of one hundred and twenty one dwarves. This leaves us at one hundred and thirty nine citizens. We are one citizen short of being considered for the new dwarven capital.

Slate 14, 129
Two of the migrants appear to just stand at the edge of the map. They both identify themselves as traders but sit there and do nothing. If they don’t come inside the fort they’re going to end up getting killed by a giant weasel or something. Normally I would encourage such a thing but if we have a single baby born Boltaura could be considered for the new dwarven capital. Then I could execute my plan.

Felsite 11, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have come up with a clever plan to deal with our vampire problem and give Card the execution he wanted. I’ve had a room dug behind the prisoner’s cell and had the connecting walls carved into fortifications. In this room I have placed a ballista directed towards the vampire’s room. Card will then proceed to fire the ballista into the criminal’s room until she has been struck down. It’s a flawless plan and one Card is sure to support.

Felsite 15, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Elves have arrived again. I really didn’t feel like dealing with them so I just ordered the Neo to kill them. He has wanted a chance to use his new masterwork Adamantine sword in real combat. When he came back he was covered in Elven blood and seemed quite pleased with himself. From what the spotters told me I can see why.

Felsite 19, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
More stupid Elves have arrived today. This time of the High Elf variety. Fortunately I won’t have to send the militia out. A squad of Violet Xelic axebugs has launched an ambush. Xelics are one of my least favorite creatures. When they go to war they wield a weapon in one hand a shield in each of their three remaining hands. Sadly they chose to ambush a citizen’s pet pig and its piglet. Hopefully the High Elf guards can put a dent in their forces. If not I’ll let them wander into the cage traps. I’d rather not lose more militia and let them train for a while longer. The majority of them lack any kind of skill in any weapons.

Felsite 21, 129
Success. The vampire has been struck down. Card may have taken several shots but he finally finished the job. With the vampire dead the fortress is now safe from him ever being released. Similarly the Violet Xelics have all been struck down or caged. The High Elves slayed a few while the rest ran straight into our cage traps. We can use them later for live militia training.

I have a masterwork adamantine longsword? You have just made one dwarf the happiest dwarf ever, barring an artifact adamantine longsword. Speaking of which, what are my stats and relationships looking like right now? I'm going assume not much in the way of friends, because military dwarves tend not to make very many especially if they have been in the military since the beginning of the fortress.

Edit: You may want to try to wait a bit for the king, at least until you get a baron, or even until you get to the Duchy tier. Otherwise, if you get the king early, the liason stops coming and you can never get a baron or champion, or such. Event if you have the baron, if you get the king first they will not upgrade to count or duke, once the liason stops coming, and you will no longer be able to ask for goods from the dwarven caravan.

I was actually kind of sad after seeing the doesn't care anymore trait and that Vinzenz was his best friend. I also tried various methods via DFhack to try and get him to wield a dire blade, one of the Frost Giant's weapons. Using any equip commands refused to work as the sword requires a size of around 600,000 to even be able to use two handed.

Edit: Next fort no glacier/tundra. This constant snow is fucking with my eyes.

Probably for the best, it would most likely slow me to the point that I would be almost useless in combat.
Also, I have incredible stats, wow.

The majority of the soldiers with rank 3 or higher in swords have good stats. Granted that's only five soldiers.

Hematite 13, 129
We have run out of our current stocks of Adamantine. To remedy this I’ve ordered the miners to dig deeper into the vein. We must have enough to outfit our most important soldiers. On a similar note I’ve noticed we’ve had a large number of citizens sitting around the fortress. I’ve made the decision to conscript all idle dwarves into military service. This will give them something productive to do in their spare time. It will also help the citizens to be somewhat trained in preparation for an emergency where we would need to assign extra citizens to defensive positions. In doing this the military has effectively doubled from thirty strong to sixty. I’ve also put in more smithing orders to ensure the new recruits are all well-equipped.

Malachite 3, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For Armok’s sake. Another forgotten beast has attacked us. I’ve ordered half of the militia to meet the beast in the caverns. The other recruits are far too inexperienced and underequipped to try and deal with such a foe.

Malachite 8, 129
The beast proved no match for our soldiers. Its poisonous bile was rendered useless by the freezing temperature. By the time any projectile had reached a soldier it had frozen into a harmless block. The militia proceeded to hack the beast to pieces until it died. I’ve made sure that this time the beast will not go to waste. The butcher is already preparing to harvest the beast’s rare meat.

Malachite 10, 129
Reksas has been butchered resulting in over three hundred units of food. Ramsey seemed delighted to be able to cook with the unique meat. Hopefully it will taste good and not cause everyone to die from poisoning. A child has also been taken by a mood and has claimed a craftsdwarf’s workshop for his project. He managed to gather all the materials he needed in a timely manner and has started work on his mysterious artifact. I can only imagine how useless this one will be. Hopefully it will at least have something nice depicted on it.

Malachite 11, 129
The child has appeared to have used some of what precious little raw Adamantine we have for his project. Our Adamantine needs to be used on important armaments not stupid little trinkets that serve no purpose. I’ve ordered Card to take care of the child once he leaves the workshop. An offense like this cannot go unpunished. Perhaps we can melt the artifact he makes back into useable Adamantine.

Malachite 15, 129
We have caught a Giant Cave Spider in our traps. This is excellent news. I’ve already assigned the animal trainer to tame the beast. If we could breed these we could use them in combination with the militia to defend the fortress.

Malachite 17, 129
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully the child will serve as an example to the rest of the fortress. I’ve also enforced a new policy that forbids the use of any Adamantine without my prior consent. All who would dare to break this rule will suffer the penalty of death.
