We try to use codenames like Candy, Bluemetal, HFS, clowns, the clown car, the circus and similar names so that we can discuss aspects of the game that are great fun to discover on your own. When you find it, you'll know what the codename means.

Personally, I think this practice is idiotic and outright counterproductive...

I agree that it's pretty counterproductive for most part, since out of those, only bluemetal and HFS works. And I tend to use bluemetal because I can never remember how to spell the actual material and it's descriptive. Random codenames pretty much just makes things more confusing to point I've seen a couple players thinking there was another layer UNDER the HFS itself.

Beside I don't find them very 'linkable' in sense, that you'll recognize the terms from experience, outside of the two that I said works. HFS works once you explains idea of Fun and challenge factor.

Then again, I'm the one that's not bugged by spoilers, and tend to forget or get ran over when I runs into things I've read about even just a hour ago. And clowns are jokes, but underworlders will eat you :D

Just a note here, but the word "adamantine" is not a spoiler. It's right there in both the stockpile and economic stones lists. On that note I do agree with Quietust that all the whole "candy" thing does is promote confusion (I mean Toady doesn't even use it for goodness' sake). HFS is a spoiler though, and should be referred to as such.

Indeed, the existence of Adamantine hasn't been a spoiler since the 2D versions - back then, it didn't show up anywhere in the user interface (labors, stockpile options, workshops, etc.) until you actually discovered it.

'Candy' should only be used when referring to maces and warhammers.

Yeah, I didn't get why adamantine is a spoiler if you scroll to the bottom on your smelter (one keypress away, since it wraps) and find "smelt adamantine wafers".

"smelt adamantine wafers"
IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE GAME, PEOPLE

"Candy" is a joke name for adamantine since it's light blue and comes in strands like cotton candy. "Candyland" and "the Circus" are joke names for what you find if you dig up too much adamantine, since you get cotton candy at the circus.

I get that OP is confused, since DF newcomers tend to have trouble with slang, but I have no clue why some of the members of this community have such vitriol for a simple joke, especially since we're pretty amiable otherwise (except to our dwarves, of course).

Such as magma being the solution* to EVERYTHING.

You and I both know that magma is not the solution to everything more or less an ease of life.

And I say this because of pesky magma creatures that sometimes get into a I'll prepared fortress.
