I suck at this mode, halp?
« on: November 01, 2012, 04:41:29 am »

I spawn as a Human Demigod with:

High Strength
Superior Agility
Superior Toughness
High Endurance
Above Average Social Awareness

Skilled Swordsman (feel free to substitute a different melee weapon skill for this)
Competent Observer
Adequate Swimmer
Proficient Shield User
Proficient Armor User
Proficient Dodger

I then level Throwing to Legendary for shiggles.

I still can't beat anything. I can kill critters/wild life just fine but anyone with a sharp weapon will turn me to pieces... I haven't found a single piece of armour because I can't kill anyone who has armour. Even with Legendary Throwing (I'm guessing it has been nerfed), all I seem to do is bruise legs/arms as the only throwable thing I can find is dirt and rocks.

As I can't kill anything, I can't get any money so I can't get any food. If something hasn't killed me by about the third day, I usually give in to hunger. I tried picking berries but apparently there's no interaction. Water is not a problem.

Is there something I'm missing? I ask everyone in town if they want to join me but everyone just says, "I'd rather not...". I try to complete their quests but they're either so far away that I die of hunger or the person they want me to kill will tear me to pieces. I've read to find bandit camps as there's usually some easy armour/weapons but I don't know how to find it.

Oh and I read a lot of stories about people using bone weapons from things they've killed and other assorted items that I've never heard of (halberds is one). How do you get these and how do you tell which weapon is stronger? I'm only used to fortress mode where I rank things based on material (usually copper<iron<steel<candy).

After reading some posts, I'm guessing A LOT of people use mods for adventurer mode?

Well, to get yourself some armor, I recommend going to fortresses or the keeps of major cities. You can just take whatever you want without getting attacked.
I usually do something like this:
Adequate (Weapon Skill)
Adequate Fighter
Adequate Swimmer
Skilled Armor User
Accomplished Dodger
Novice Reader

And for stats:
Superior Strength
Superior Agility
High Toughness
High Endurance
Above Average Willpower

I cannot find a keep/major city. I've tried spawning everywhere. Most places just have 'houses', others have hundreds of shops but I cannot find a keep. How come you can take without getting attacked? Isn't it stealing?

Lets just say that, ahhh, people aren't programmed to care at the moment.
Do you play with a tileset? It would be much easier to explain what a fort or city looks like in that case.

1)  Hunger can be easily solved by butchering and then eating the products. As long as you have a blade and are standing over a corpse you can do this.

2)  As already suggested, walk into a fortress and help yourself to armour lying around. You can also find soldiers here, who will be far more willing to join you on your wanderings than civvies. When they die, loot thier corpses for goodies.

3) Finding a keep is easy - they will be marked on your travel map near towns/villages as a fairly distinctive symbol.

Oh, and to solve your food problem, you can butcher most of the animals you kill.
Just press x, go down to butcher, and use a sharp tool to cut it up.

You have have been ninja'd but you explained how to do it. I was hacking of limbs when I was fighting, picking up the limbs then licking them. Tried to cook it on a fire but I just warmed it up then licked it again... Now I know how to butcher, I shouldn't die.

And yes, I'm currently using the Phoebus tileset. Was the first set I ever used so I haven't changed (my eyes blur if I play ASCII DF).

Oh, you use Phoebus.
Fuck yeah, this is really easy to explain now.
Alright.
Cities will look like a bunch of dark colored smoothed floors. Maybe with an asterisk in the middle.
Forts that you can loot will look like grey beehives. I would post pictures, But I have to get to school.

Yup, I already identified the smoothed floor for cities. I'll keep my eyes open for grey beehives, thanks! The world I genned is a bit crap so I'll try on a new world later.

If you spawn in a town and can't find any animals to butcher, at least one house will have big bags full of prickle berries or strawberries. You get a free container and plenty of food, which is always a good deal. Just be careful not to carry too much food or you'll be weighed down with stuff you'll never eat.

The key to defeating armed opponents is to let your companions deal with them before you even get close. In a straight matchup between you and a kobold/goblin/bandit/etc., there's about a 25% chance that you'll die without even landing a shot. Cross/bowmen are amazing for this, take at least 2 with you wherever you go.

Aiming for the legs will at least put most creatures on the ground, even if you just land a small hit. This greatly reduces their speed and their fighting ability, and if you sever the leg they'll bleed heavily as well.

Only problem with cross/bowmen is that when they run out of ammo they don't re-stock.
I really hope when toady finally gets around to-configuring the Dwarven brain, the adventure AI kicks it up a notch, enough to seek out better equipment and supplies...

I want to say this is a blessing when facing them. also you end up alot harder time when a Bandit who just fired a quiver of arrows into you start looking for more arrows or going into the second reserve. Also I think Dfhack has ways to restock companions supplies.

Yeah, you're best off looking for lairs and vampires. An old world will usually have an almost solid ring of lairs around towns. Inside, you'll find an unarmed peasant (make sure it's not a full moon when you go hunting!!), or a supernaturally tough unarmed peasant. With skilled dodging, you'll be able to kill them easily (maybe you'll get bruised, but...).

Or, gain buddies, then go for a swim. Bam, armour.

Sneaking. Use. Sneaking.
It is your favorite friend with throwing.
Also throw bolt's and arrows if you can, throwing SHARP rocks are effective with killing.
