There is, infamously, a real US soldier whose name is "Staff Sgt. Max Fightmaster"

Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller.

I didn't make this up, he is real, and if you don't know who he is you should find out.

John Steele was one of my math lecturers. I imagined him as some tall blonde Austr(al)ian with huge muscles.

And of course, Major The Hon. John Wickham Gascoyne Beresford Steed MC, OM. Very different sort of manliness but manly like a sir.

How about Angus McBlood?

Lord Adonis

Not exactly manly I suppose but it is the name of a real UK politician.
(And that's his official photo.  There are worse.)

My first thought of name: Chuck Caber

(As for real people, a soldier sadly just killed in Afghanistan (FauxGreen-on-Blue, it sounds like) was Lt Edward Drummond-Baxter, reminding me strongly of the character "Bulldog Drummond", amongst others.)

My name means "monster." Is that manly?

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
