Random urge: badass pacifist
« on: October 31, 2012, 10:48:26 am »

I have a sudden urge to play a game as a badass pacifist and was hoping some of you guys could toss out a couple of recommendations.  Bonus points if it's mechanically enforced or thematically appropriate rather than a specific choice of playstyle on an out of character level.  Super mega bonus points if the game specifically focuses (or has the potential to focus) on preventing a grand conflict from occurring through (mostly) non-violent means.  Any suggestions?

Fallout 1 and 2 let you do that. LCS too.

Dishonored. Killing results in the plague becoming stronger (since you basically provide food for the plague rats). Also nets a worse ending. Avoiding killing is strongly encouraged and even your main targets can be disposed of without killing. And you're a superpowered badass.

Planescape: Torment. You have to fight a grand total of one enemy in the entire game, that being a zombie at the very start.

Is that an actual mode, or just something you came up with, PeTe?

Mirror's Edge is practically word-for-word what you're looking for. You can get through the entire game without killing (or even attacking) a single mook, and you're fighting (well, running) against a repressive Next Sunday AD government. There is precisely one time where the game requires you to use a weapon, and all you're doing is sniping the engine block of a car. Depending on what you want to do, you can either avoid conflict entirely or non-lethally disarm and disable the blues.

Well Deus Ex has the elements as well.

Stealth Kill or Crack (and kill indirectly) in most cases.

Even better if you take the other pacifist routes: send musicians everywhere to play soul-changing music, and rescue prositutes off the streets and send them to convert powerful conservatives into mindless love slaves.

MGS3 is great for this, mostly because playing it lethal on high is living hell, and the rewards for nonlethal boss takedowns are full of awesome. Also, minor spoilers, the amount of people you've killed affects one boss fight.
