The advantage of ASCII is the ability to quickly tell the difference between tiles. The graphic tileset can leave some questions, say, as to which dwarves are carpenters, and which dwarves are miners, because the tiles are very small. This is as opposed to, say, modern 3D games where it is mostly clear what the graphics are representing (i.e. is it a bowelf or an axeorc?). The same applies to old games such as Warcraft 2, where the units are quite discernible. The graphic tiles are small even by Warcraft 2 standards, so its easier to understand what a colored and possibly flashing letter is than a tileset. Additionally, some things remain hard to discern, even with tilesets. Pumps show up as barrels with tilesets, and insect colonies show up as wells, which is not very helpful at all.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

Iunless graphics can be made for every single thing (like it can be done with creatures) ASCII is better becouse of the already mentioned abstraction factor.
ASCII is the best becouse its abstract, and easier to "read", at least for someone who learned to play using ASCII
i hate when someone posts a DF screenshot with graphics, i can't figure anything out!

Oh man, I didn't expect this much ASCII elitism from a sarcastic thread like this.

This thread just proved something. I hope you guys saw it too.

Say that again after a few pages.

Also, think why people who start threads about tilesets vs ASCII stuff (except this one) and people who fiercly argue about graphics are mostly pro-ASCII people.

You're just continuing the cycle.

ASCII all the way. But it's irrelevant. DF is DF, changing one squiggle to another won't change the game, it'll just change the medium. To whoever's ends to whoever's ends.
Alternative opinion, only n00bs who can't stand pure, un-adulterated awesomness of DF use tilesets. Counter-point?
You sound like someone arguing over a game's value based on its graphics.

Except with ASCII.

Angry retort, and something else...

Seriously, I have a fever and can't keep this side of the argument going without someone arguing for tilesets.  All I see so far is people arguing for ascii and people arguing about arguing.  Where are the tileset guys?  Probably sucking their thumbs and cuddling their teddy bears.

Someone once made a point about there's not enough infomation available in 256 characters to properly represent the game.  Take that an put it in your own words.

Oh wait, tileset people are afraid of letters.

And..... go!

You said you rely on society to scare you?

Each time you use a tileset, someone, somewhere brutally murders a kitten. Small, cute, big-eyed kitten.

That'll happen anyway. Catsplosions need to be contained.

That would imply kittens have been elevated to human status.

Proceed.

Ive been slowly introducing ASCII into my life, and its gotten to the point where as long as its not too chaotic I can do ASCII.  Fortress ASCII at full speed (during battles) is still a little much, but ASCII is better insomuch as it allows me greater imagination and is simpler.

ASCII is the way to go: kind of like how I learned to drive standard after automatic transmission.  standard is soo much more satisfying.
