(steam things)
...
Your comp cant run Maia? is it a vista?

Steam is a digital download service, so there's some amount of account things that go with it.  Supposedly they de-glitched the offline mode recently; maybe that will make it less of a hassle for you now?

Which game did it "eat"?

-----

The listed specs for Maia are:

Processor: Intel Core i5-2300 (quad 2.8 GHz/3.1GHz turbo) or AMD Phenom II X4 940 (quad 3.0 GHz) or better
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Dedicated card with 1GB VRAM
OS: Linux 64, Windows

My box is south of that on all marks:

Processor: Low Power Athlon (dual 2.6GHz, 45W)
Memory: 4 GB RAM physical, capped @ 3.2 GHz because 32-bit addressing
Graphics: 512 MB VRAM cheapo Geforce 210
OS: XP (still)

So.... yeah.  >_>

When I built it, I picked parts based on what I could use out of my repair stash, but still get a decently new computer (at the time, 2009).  I never meant for it to still be a primary box this far down the road...  but parts are expensive, and I don't have a lot of spare dollars, definitely not enough for an all-new box.  :(

They de-glitched the offline mode years ago.

Besides, games on steam that don't use the build-in DRM, can be used without starting up steam.

Also, CIV V , am I correct? ((Also, I'm not certain steam is responsible, IIRC what the problem was.))

It was civ V about a month after it came out.

Yay, Can't remember what the actual problem was though.

Steam not liking people, and requiring internet to play the game when we had the disk. and it installed.

seems like a Civ V thing, I can play pretty much all my non-ubisoft games offline on steam. Online DRM is historically not a Valve thing.

That's the online authentication, which is featured on all modern games nowadays. Sure, civ 5 uses the Steam works DRM*, which is very mild compared to other DRM's.

*Online verifaction required during installations. Requires steam to function. Technically not an always-online DRM, but for some people steam still doesn't run offline. (Can't verify that really, offline mode has been fixed almost 2 years ago, but people keep complaining about it...)

Point in case is that compared to other options, steam is one of the better alternatives.

All that because of the game, or merely because everyone keeps pushing steam as the better proponent.

Not that Origin is that bad, but it really is just EA's online store.

Downgrade to all an all burrito diet for six months.  The savings will fund the new box and the burritos will drive away all human company giving you the time to use it.

Actually, I still don't quite understand what the problem with the game is. And well, discs don't mean anything in this time and age. They're merely the carriers of information, and no authentication.

Edit: Really, perhaps it's just something silly and easily overlooked that can be fixed.

besides, needing to be always online is a fault of the game, not steam. a lot of steam games work offline, even without steam

The reason I dont like steam is that it says you MUST have internet and MUST be logged on to play the games downloaded on the computer.
100% false. You can play any game that has only Steam's DRM in offline mode. If a game requires you to be online all the time then that is something added by the game's developer or publisher.

I have a laptop which I travel with. It stays in offline mode while I travel and I am able to play any steam game I have installed. I put it online for updates maybe once every 2 months.

I realize we're here to talk about Maia but Steam is a fine platform for distribution.

As for Maia, I'm really excited to see all of the progress that has been made. I haven't loaded it up in a few versions and may do so tonight.
