Hey fellow Bay12ers,

maybe you could help me, i need to expand my English vocabulary. I'm looking for a java based vocabulary trainer (preferably free) for my nokia2710c where i could create a list of words i need to learn, and the app would randomly pick from the database to test me. Ideally, I should be able to make the list on my pc and export it on my phone.
Any ideas?

Not sure if it's java based, but Anki sounds like what you want. I know it's on android, but I don't know what your phone uses.

I know it's not what you're looking for, but I learned most of my vocabulary from reading books. It helps that I'm a native English speaker and I understand it would be difficult if you have trouble with many words, but if you can sound the word and apply it to the surrounding text, it shouldn't be too hard. It's actually a great way to learn how words can mean different things in different situations.

Agree with book+have a dictionary at hand, especially if they're books in the field you want to learn/areas you're interested in - that way you're likelier to encounter words that are useful to you.  Then if you really want to drill, write down those words as you come across them and periodically review and test yourself off that list...

Honestly expanding your vocabulary is really just about adopting additional words and way of phrasing things.

Just find a love of words. Read books and find words you like and go "You know what? I'll use it!"

Find sentences that you cannot say very well and find the words that express exactly what you mean.

It is apperant to me that expanding ones vocabulary is about the adoption of additional words and phrases.

The best way to achieve this is just to fall inlove with the English Language. Books are an excellent reference where you can find many a word for you to discover.

As well finding new ways to express yourself in areas where you were once insufficient functions excellently.

It seems that all you need to do is find word and phrases you like and just use them.

Book reading would probably be a good source.
