I keep getting migrants, with pop cap at 0, and the outpost has come. Anyone has a way to prevent migrants (that works) ?
Set pop_cap to 1
Yeah, if you set the limit to zero, it REMOVES the limit, in effect, it makes the limit infinity
I should totallydo that on a normal fortress... INFINATE MIGRANTS FTW :P

Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.

Has anyone made some progress ? I've been busy with RL (and an idea of mod, too  ::))
I will probably have the time to continue this week.

This looks pretty Fun! May I join and have a hermit?

If so, this is definitely where I want to perish embark. As a dwarf.

It only says "Terrifying" because it's next to the ocean and dwarves are scared of water, right?

Well, whaddya know? The little guy made it to the 2.5 year mark.

I was really worried that he'd be lonely, so I figured a little Science might be in order. I'll share the results when everyone makes it through the 10 years.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also discovered that the [POPULATION_CAP:1] is basically ignored. You can disable migrants AND caravans/liasons by removing all [ACTIVE_SEASON:x] tags from your entity type. But even though these raws were pre-modded to remove all active seasons except for AUTUMN from dwarves, migrants still come annoyingly year-round. Removing that tag during the game works and is reversible, so it's a decent option.

I haven't found a mention of a way to prevent migrants while leaving caravans enabled. I WAS able to make a little .lua script for dfhack that will prevent migrants from coming for the rest of the current season. You have to run it every season that you want to prevent migrants, though.

I don't feel that this is cheating for a Hermit game, because all they do is require endless tedious suicide/murder and burial/slabbing, drain FPS with piles of clothing and body parts, and depopulate the home civilization. I consider this a legitimate workaround to the bug of population not working if set to 1.

stopmigrants.lua:

If you copy that code into a text file and save it as stopmigrants.lua in your \hack\scripts\ subdirectory, then you can type stopmigrants into dfhack and it will run. That puts off the horde of immigrants for a little while, at least!

EDIT 12/3: Hit the five year mark, also. A relatively boring, safe stretch that plays quickly.

EDIT 12/6: Passed the 7.5 year mark. A few Science results are in:

I kinda feel like trading is outside the spirit of a hermit game anyway.

I've also been having problems with migrants comming, despite pop cap 1.

Same here, but I plan to kill caravans eventually.  For now they can feed some of the starving dwarves on the surface.

Made it to year 10. He's a good dwarf, but I still hate his malingering guts most of the time.

...

Rigoth Kuletsokan, Hermit from The Amazing Merchants, arrives after 10 years at the edge of the Morass of Negating.

He looks fairly respectable, in poorly-forged steel armor and a giant bat leather cloak, under which he wears only a cat leather loincloth. Parts of the armor are still recognizable as melted bits of musical instruments and anvils.

As a gift for the other hermits, he has brought that most important item of Dwarven clothing, several pairs of silk socks spun from the webs of the Mountain Titan, Ingul Duneswind the Vines of Oiling!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

“I’ve left Guard Cat in charge of the Fortress. He’s a good cat,” he begins. “Um, does anybody know what kind of present might impress a lady cyclops?”

If any other dwarves make it to the meeting and can get past his loneliness-induced crush on a she-cyclops,  I'm sure Rigoth will have some stories to tell!

...

Modding to reduce the population threshold for megabeast and titan attack was definitely a Fun idea, though it produced a few tense moments. He was one break away from missing a critical lever pull a couple times.

What now?
