I would argue that they look like a realized-as-a-cartoon version of Dwarf Fortress-y.

In my tileset, for one, the eyes are a bit tall like depicted here.

So I've been thinking about the characters, or rather, when they join the party. Traditionally, characters join the party until early midgame, with rivals/villains-turned-good(ish) usually being recruited in late midgame. Characters that join in the endgame tend to be powerful or not plot-relevant (of course there's exceptions. Looking at you, Renault), so I guess we should stick to that.

So what we have already established is:
  • Ursula joins first. DUH.
  • Derm and Zanzy will be the last characters to join, the former being the red herring climax boss.
Some other stuff that I'm kind of suggesting, since I find that they make sense:
  • Fuzzy, due to his exotic nature, will probably be recruited in the battlefield that represents Other Games. It certainly is appropriate.
  • XK, the resident gambler, will most likely be in the casino. Gamblers tend to be recruited later than most (due to their unreliable nature), but not last.
  • Of the two robots, one (probably USEC as he's the designated healer. Right?) will be recruited much earlier than the other. Having them too close to eachother kinda lessens the effect.
  • Evander is intitially probably more motivated by research than the whole "saving the world (or whatever we're trying to do)" thing. Definitively joins early when the obvious danger isn't that high.
So with that in mind, I suggest the initial five man party to be:
  • Ursula
  • Me or the Fool
  • Evander
  • greatorder
  • USEC
's a balanced mix of damage, tanking and support.

Damn, just read through most of the thread and I'm a bit disappointed I missed out on most of the discussion. I'd be willing to contribute ideas (Because who doesn't like having large amounts of ideas guys?). I don't want to be in the game or anything, since I don't really have any of the skills required to sprite or animate sprites and whatnot, and I don't really want to be in unless I'm contributing.

Quick question, I read through about 75% of the thread and I was wondering if you guys had a solid plot hammered out yet. Or is it still kind of vague, since you're all working on the basic stuff first.

The plot is really up in the air at this point. We've got some stuff figured out EG:

I'm the midboss/fake Big Bad who turns... well, not good. But I'm with the protagonist.
Armok is the final big boss
There's some form of relationship levels with your party members. If you upgrade one of them to 'romantic' some future dialogue and maybe an event or two will reference this.
The final confrontation will take place in Various Nonsense (Maybe. VN could be the postgame extra dungeon where you fight the Brothers Administratum)

I can't recall much at the moment due to reasons but there's what I got.

We also were going to have pony and penguin kingdoms/organizations/things, and the player would be forced(?) to join one or the other to advance the plot. Obviously each group would have different items/quest-lines (maybe dungeons?), thus doubling the replayability. Oh, and we were also going to have a wolf kingdom that just kinda hung out to the side. What else...

Well, there's also a dwarven kingdom that Ursula grew up in, though it's probably not going to impact the story too much as far as I can remember. Mind you what Ursula(/her family?) is doing with the dwarfs isn't clear at this point. Some people have been toying around the idea that she's faking amnesia to allow us to play with some RPG tropes, while GreatWyrmGold pretty much wants to play it straight. Really, the plot is extremely vague at this point, so contribute away!

Well, I think Ursula should be on her own for the first little bit...at least until the elder decides she's a hero.

Or however we're going to set the plot up. She should probably crawl through the first dungeon or two on her own to help establish her character as... What is her character? Have we reached a conclusion on that point yet? I was thinking about her being determined and stoic or something like that, but that's just my opinion. But whatever traits she has, we definitively need to start establishing them in the first dungeon. If we do go with a stoic Ursula, we could have her personality warm up as the player does the whole friendship mini-game with the other party members. Admittedly the whole thing is a bit cliche, but it would gel well with the friendship mechanics and provide more of an incentive. Who knows.

Well if she's faking amnesia to go on an adventure I wouldn't describe that as stoic.

I'd more go with 'eager'. Possibly a bit clueless/reckless as this is clearly not something normal people do.

Nooooonononono. None of this "you're the hero, go save the world" business. Unless a character belongs to a military or somesuch, that's the biggest excuse of a plot I've ever seen.
