Mikroeganisms? What's that? Nope, never heard of those!
Oh, it's quite simple.
They're the magical-bullshit of biology.

"'Why did X happen?' BACTERIA. Now sit down and shut up."
-Every biologist ever.
No, in that case it's always the fluid nature of the phospholipid bi-layer.
Or hydrogen bonding.
Isn't hydrogen bonding only something that occurs in water?
At least, the hydrogen bonding I'm thinking of.  I guess H bonding to anything would be hydrogen bonding.

I think you'd enjoy college level Chemistry classes!
Well, that's what the AP Chem class is.  But I'm still in regular chem right now.  Gotta wait 'til next year.
As fun as Chemistry is though, I don't think it'll be something I'll study post high-school..
It when a magnetic bond (for lack of a better word) occurs between hydrogen and either oxygen, fluorine, chlorine and a couple other elements that I can't remember. H-bonds are what holds the two strands in DNA together and gives it its characteristic shape, and it also gives water many of its properties, and since a cells cytoplasm is mostly water, it's pretty damn important.  I say magnetic because there is no actual exchange of electrons occur as there is in ionic or covalent bonds.

I know.  I told you I was in chemistry.  Hell, we learn that in biology here in VA.
The hydrogen bonding I was thinking of was the bonds present in water.  It's pretty important, plants would dehydrate without cohesion and adhesion.
But yeah, Hydrogen bonds occur whenever hydrogen bonds with anything.  My bio teacher is just a bad influence on me. :-\

Oh, and I think instead of magnetic you mean covalent.  In covalent bonds there is no exchange of electrons.  They "share" electrons.  A magnetic bond would be more of an ionic bond.

No, because with a covalent bond is different from an H-bond, since there is no actual exchange of electrons occurring with the H-bond, it's more along the lines of london dispersion forces and dipole-dipole bonding.  It just irritates me to no end that I can't find a technical term for that, apart from H-bond.

Something along the lines of a metallic bond? There's no real bonding there, it's just electrons and positive nuclei all living together like "yeah bro"

Well, take water.
The hydrogen bonding that takes place in water is between one oxygen and two hydrogen.  Each of these are from a different molecule of H2O.  These bonds occur because of water's structure.  It looks something like this.
H-O-H
Those dashes are covalent bonds.  Oxygen is 2-, and it has to lose 2 electrons to have its outer shell of electrons be filled.
Hydrogen, on the other hand, is (1)+.  This means it has to gain one electron to satisfy its outer shell of electrons.
This means one O bonds with two separate H's.  Neither of them are actually metals, so they can't have an ionic bond.  What they have is closer to a covalent bond.  But you are right, it is a different kind of bond, but there is still an "exchange" of electrons.  You cannot have a bond without an "exchange" of electrons.
Oh, but there's a reason you can't find a more technical name than Hydrogen Bond.

It's not a metallic bond.  It is like a covalent bond, but it acts a bit differently.

Jesus. My School's curriculum is so odd when people say stuff like "chem 1" I have absolutely no clue what it means in comparison to where I am.

I've just started my first semester of chem, but I follow this conversation quite well. In fact I had a test onstuff similar to this today. Ionic refers to bonds between atoms with highly different electronegativities, more the 5%, or .3 if I recall. Covalent is sub-divided into polar and non-polar. Metallic refers to the Pseudo-bond between atoms of metal, which wouldn't ordinarily bond.

Sigh,a hydrogen bond is a weak bond formed by different charges being attracted to an opposite charge,  called hydrogen bond because hydrogen always loses its electrons and becomes positiv(in covalent bonding)

No, it's called a hydrogen bond because it's a particularly strong form of dipole-dipole bonding that warrants it's own name, because it always occurs with hydrogen.

How did this thread get derailed from eating lichen, to definitions of molecular & atomic bonds?

It'll be ok, I hope.  We all expect a delay before the next update, why not fill the time?  Someone can always make/update a list of all the actual game posts if needed.

Ah.  We did bonds a little while back.  Right now we're on molar conversions, and theoretical yield.  It's a real pain in the ass.
