We aren't tough or durable at all.  We are a delicate porcelain teacup with some weapons, and so far a lot of luck.  If our new proto-brain is telling us it would be a bad idea to approach something, let's listen to it.  Maybe try to get ourselves some new weapons after we have a realistic chance of surviving being on the receiving end.

Well, we're a pretty simple organism.  We don't have much to break, so we don't have to worry all that much about combat.  If, for instance, a cockroach looses it's head, it can survive for a long time because it's such a simple creature.  Humans, now there's a teacup for you. 
But this centipede is more like a hand-towel.  You can whip it around, drop it, toss it to a dog, but it's not going to die very easily.  As odd as it sounds, getting more organs is going to make us less powerful, unless that organ is a shell.

We are already somewhat specialized.  We have sensory organs, legs for locomotion, we're starting to develop a nervous system, we have skin and hair, etc.  We aren't exactly a wad of protoplasm that will be fine as long as it doesn't get splashed apart or run out of energy, here.

Most DNA is the same. Anyways, microbes have a dazzling array of enzymes and organelles that let each individual cell do the work of a whole organism.

Yeah, and if worst comes to worst, we can incorporate some of them into our digestive tract to make it more efficient.
