Well, after getting the very odd announcement of "The Stray Puppy has been struck down" I wonder what in the world happened, and found it's body next to some very heavily injured wolves, there was blood and wolf chunks everywhere, and one wolf is now missing a leg. Oh yeah, now that winter's here, the wolves have shown up.
Some traps have been placed around the well, and more food is being cooked now that a second kitchen has been built. Progress is going on pretty steady, and I'm thinking about using the winter months to make a foray further into the mountain.

EDIT: Another dog has been lost to wolves, at least the wolves took a loss as well, this time.

UPDATE:

22nd Moonstone
The fortress has suffered it's first loss, after losing a pair of dogs to the wolves, SanDiego went on a killing spree and slew half of the wolf pack, but ran out of bolts and was struck down by the remaining 3 wolves. The Alpha wolf is now named Vunomurmim, "Lungswims".
A -Chalk Coffin- will be placed in the meeting hall to house his body.

In case of other deaths, a proper room will be dug out as a tomb for more coffin placement.

EDIT: SanDiego, if you want to be reDorf'd, we have plenty of others.

EDIT:
UPDATE:

27th Moonstone
Ruhn has buried SanDiego's body in the meeting hall.
The burial hall is almost dug out, and coffins are being moved in. More of the area has been mined out, and large amounts of obsidian have been found.

EDIT:
UPDATE:

2nd Opal
Our minig operations have discoved a large chasm, mining will be discontinued until further notice, and a door is being made to plug the shaft. I don't want any cats falling down there.

How's the military work in this version?
Now that my shirt is stained with SanDiego's blood, my sword longs to taste wolfblood.

How's the military work in this version?
Exactly the same as in 40d.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

He probably hasn't played that, I know I haven't.
The way the military works is VERY different from the current version, instead of assigning people to squads, they basically each have their own personal, one-man squad. And instead of making schedules, you simply "activate" them, basically switching them from "civilian" mode to "military" mode.

Now that my shirt is stained with SanDiego's blood, my sword longs to taste wolfblood.
I'm sure it will, once your dwarf starts to actually pick up his sword and armor.

EDIT:
UPDATE:

22dn Opal
A herd of monkeys has stumbled by and robbed us of SanDiego's equipment.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As you can see, this includes the crossbow and an iron cap.

UPDATE:

END OF YEAR ONE:

We have survived the first year! We have almost no booze, but a food stockpile the likes of which I had not dreamed of! We had enough food to last us many more months, and so I consider this a grand victory.
I would spend forever explaining how the fortress looks, but I think this says it better.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As for the cats, every single one of them adopted Aseaheru, congrats.

Here is the fortress file, I decided to post the entire folder, and not just the save, as I had to use a hex-editor on the application itself. The editor I used is also in the folder.

Good Luck to Splint! Our lives are in his hands, now.

That's not true - the military interface in 40d and earlier allows you to define squads of any size and with a complex hierarchy (though it prevents high-skill soldiers from being subordinate to low-skill ones). Take a look at the wiki page for more information.

Also, squad tends to follow their leader - so if Urist McUberacedwarf decides to take a drink en route to meet the siege, all his subordinates will acompany him.

1st Granite year..... Whatever the hell it is.

I have been entrusted to lead this community to at least survival, if not greatness. My first order of business? Dig away our ramshackle dweling sand make some nice, symmetric, and economical abodes, as well as a proper dining hall with natural stone supports and expanding the tomb; I plan to send our smal militia out to eradicate the local wolf population for food.

[And so Begins the regin of the Mysterious Jester of Armok. My updates will have few if any screens just as a heads up.]
