You could just push the government into the magma cannon.

Wait... are we building the cannon as a black project, or as a rouge WMD that we will use to hold the world hostage?

Cleary it's a localized WMD, to allow us an opprotunity to secede from the mountain home.

Down with the repressive mountainhomes, with their pesky rules about basic dwarven and elven rights!

I have, actually, built a magma cannon in 23a over WINE. It took around one year to build and was the primary project worked on in that fort, until I pulled the trigger.

The effects were mind-bendingly strange. My recommendation is to make a backup save before firing the magma cannon.

These snake men sound dangerous, can I get some leather armor and a rock sword?
Maybe, if I have the resources, currently, I'm having trouble getting wood to power the furnaces and smelter, or for handles to the swords, since my Lumberjack is very lazy.

They'll only attack us if we use the cave river for water. That said, use it for water alot, because I'll learn quicker with some live targets.
Will do!

Also, it is advisable to build "safety net" bridges downstream from the main one so  we lose fewer in the floods.
Yeah, downstream is actually in the "Down" direction, right? It hasn't flooded yet.

...And for all the talk over magma cannons, you know we don't actually have that, yet, right?

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

Heresy, all forts come completed with at least one localized magma cannon.

UPDATE:

Out first success with metal production! We now have bronze! Also, the first rock sword has been completed.
These snake men sound dangerous, can I get some leather armor and a rock sword?
You now have the fortress's first rock sword, which you crafted yourself, at a good -quality-, too.
As for the leather armor, because I forgot to tan the skin from the mule, it rotted, so I can't make you that, I did, however, get you a bronze chain mail shirt, if that's a fair compensation.

Should have just made a bronze sword instead.

Actually, rock (obsidian) swords are as good as steel ones.

Now I can fish in safety!  8)

If anyone admires my fine work and would like their own rock sword, we can arrange something for a few coins.

To build up a proper bridge defence system, what you want is a decent size level bridge across the water, and some raising drawbridges on the sides. I think you can also use an aqueduct to produce an identically walled-off means of crossing water, but it will only be one-tile wide.

Alternatively, you can skip the raising bridges and use aqueducts on either side of the bridge. That fixes messy use of levers.

I thought there was a bug dating back this far regarding rock swords making them... Less than stellar. But if they do cut as good as they should in this version then hell yes..

No, you're thinking of the obsidian short sword bug that originated in version 0.31.01 - back in 40d and earlier, they were exactly as powerful as steel (and I've actually confirmed this in a disassembly).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
