Who said anything about eating the spears? Even if they yeild little or no meat we can have our militia train on them by beating the shit out of them.

Yes, but they appear to be training dummies because splint is insane, they are still groundhogs in actuality.

I think in 23a animals can't be hunted to extinction. Could anyone confirm this?

UPDATE:

11th Timber
Migrants have arrived! these booze-stealing wretches will be added to the main page as they waddle on-map.

As for fortress progress, work is being pushed in the direction of food production, since alchohol is not strictly necassary for life, it is being cooked, along with horse fat, plump helmet spawn, and whatever else we can get our grubby mitts on.
Also, a road has been built to the river, and a bridge now spans over it.

Edit: look at the main page for new dorf's, also, splint, we have a sworddwarf now, but it's a female, you want them? She has a puppy.

Okay, the last of the Migrants have arrived, our population is now at 15, almost double that of before, we also now have 9 animals, one of which is a female mule, so, can you milk a mule? Cause that would be helpful.

Well, moar meat then! Unless they are owned. That would mean less dwarf and more meat!
Dwarves get hungry faster in winter.
I'm pretty sure that's not true, and I can verify that fairly easily by checking my disassembly (unless there's some other code elsewhere that increments hunger in addition to the part that actually triggers hunger/thirst/drowsiness/etc).
I'm not really sure about this, but I have the distant feeling I read it somewhere on the wiki...
ah, here!
What makes the winter so taxing?
*You cannot fish outside, nor farm for food.
*Dwarves get hungry faster in Winter.
*A wave of 8-12 immigrant dwarves may arrive just before Winter begins. Your game may end in 21 dwarves starving to death, or killing each other in berserk rages.
*By now you will need to take at least minimal steps to keep your dwarves happy.

That is if any will yeild any meat. I've had hunters get some animals only to have a skull int he shop because that's all they yielded. On the plus side I heard training dummies rather than groundhogs.
That's a problem unique to version 0.31 and later - back in 40d and earlier, all adult animals give one unit of meat per SIZE (which means that horses give 9 meat) and child animals give 2/3 of that.

I think in 23a animals can't be hunted to extinction. Could anyone confirm this?
They indeed cannot be hunted to extinction - population limits do exist, but those limits are reset at the beginning of each year (and they are only effective for outdoor wildlife and for fish; creatures that attack from the cave river, chasm, and magma flow are infinite).

[edit]
I've just checked the hunger code in 23a, and units do not eat more food during Winter. The only source of additional hunger (and thirst) is when a mother is carrying her baby.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The mule is, in fact, owned, otherwise we could consider eating it in an emergency, but if all else fails, we can eat the dogs. But we will not be eating cats, they are too useful in killing our vermin. And I like them anyway.

Alright, you are now the peasant, he was busy detailing a floor, but I turned that off so you can choose what he does.

UPDATE:

1st Moonstone:
Winter is now upon us, farming is hopeless, and due to recent overcrowding of groundhogs and monkeys outside, everyone has been ordered inside until further notice, with our sworddwarf guarding the gate.
