problems with resuming games (non technical)

i got the hang of thr game. but i find it near impossible to resume an old game effectively.  i feel a bit burnt out (masterwork mod). i may be in the middle of burying a bunch of people and fending off an invasion. and lets nkt forget i dont know the strength of my militia... its like i shuld be keeping a log.

i was trying to dump some dead corpses in cages and couldnt find where i put my garbage dump. so i just made another one (btw citizen caged corpses are easier to dump than non).

not to mention i wish i could figure out a way to control where my dwarfs were at all times. im tempted to only allow certain dwarfs outside. because its a nightmare during combat. i was tempted to use autolabor but that creates a mess of chaos where i dont know whos doing what anymore (i wonder if autolabor acknowledges restriction burrows)

You can view the garbage zones you've created by presing Shift+r ;)

If you're having issues with keeping dwarves where they should be, you could adopt a form of sealed workspace system that I used to have in some of my fortresses. Basically, it's a whole room, sealed up, with two levers, the whole insides are for dwarves to live, eat, sleep and work. The levers links to two rooms, both of them have stockpiles for input product, output product, food and drink, as well as waste stockpile. Take turns using each storeroom as it get filled up or the supply runs low.

I don't know how automatons are managed in utilities since I manually manage it all, but I does have restricted task dwarves. I've taken to disabling refuse hauling on a lot of them on more dangerous/busier maps and outright disabling hauling on workshop specialists.

If I'm picking up a fort I haven't played in a while I usually do the following things:

Flip through the levels of the fortress, also using the minimap to highlight areas of disturbed rock that are neither on-screen nor the caverns.
Check the announcements.
Check the combat log.
Check the units screens.
Check the military screen -- what are the soldiers wearing, and what are the civilians wearing?
Check the stocks screen for basics like food and drink, and for an idea of what the fortress does with itself.
Open DT and examine everyone's skills.

By the time I've taken a quick look at all that, I generally have some idea about what needs doing first.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
