Need a little advice
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:47:52 am »

I'm fairly new to DF and I have a stable fortress in a haunted biome. Ironicly I have no zombie/evil cloud problems, I have problems giving everyone jobs. I have 21 dwarfs but there is always 8 without a job. Any advice?

I believe there is metals deep underground but nothing higher up, there is lots of wood on map and the map has had no real danger other than a evil cloud which always misses the fort and a slight bunnysplosion.

So, you're question is "What to do with idle dwarfs?"
Mine! Chop trees! Craft crafts! Build traps! Hunt! Butcher! Tan! Cook! Brew! Farm! Process! Spin! Tailor! Cut! Encrust! Train! Smith!
Not sure if you have an exact question ...

Stripmine every underground level, run industries you're not familiar with, crank out enough craft to shock the traders beardless.

Thanks, another question, the world is in the Age of Fairy Tails, will that effect adventure mode in any way?

According to the DF wiki:

Quote
Age of Fairy Tales
Toady One' quote from 2008 devlog:

"I finally saw a world arrive at the Age of Fairy Tales, which happens if mundane creatures (ie humans) make up at least 90% of the world's civilized population with the requirement that there are still a few fantasy creatures lurking around. In this case, it was a kobold cave that their scouts never found. I guess all of the fairy tales were about people having their crap stolen."

The Age of Fairy Tales was a time when fantastic creatures were few and far between, and some even doubted their existence.

So the world should be fairly boring due to the fact 90% of the creatures are mundane. However, you could make it your mission to track down the last non-mundane creatures and slay them all.  :P

I only run into over-idler probalms when I have 80+ dwarves. Re-assign idlers to industries that need more manpower dwarfpower if you can/will not begin new ones.

I find one of the easiest ways to branch into new industries, or assign more work to current ones, is to evaluate what it is you are already producing, and try to find if you can make it with another industry that needs more work.

Mining builds strenght and character, filling your dwarves' hearts with bravery and their lungs with dust.

Build 5-10 screw pumps in a room somewhere. Set the pumps to be worked manually and then turn on the pumping labor on every peasant dwarf. This will have two effects:
1)Dwarves that train on the pump will slowly build up their strength and other physical traits
2)Peasants will eventually all become colored red, allowing for easy distinguishing between most peasants and most more skilled workers.
