Finding horror games with empty voids
« on: October 29, 2012, 01:03:27 am »

I'm trying to find horror games that feed off a fear of depthless voids (Kenophobia), and the unseen things inside it. It doesn't need to be dark to achieve this so much as a feeling of absolute emptiness around you, or ahead of you.

Games like Amnesia just aren't cutting it, with me becoming more and more callous as I play. Without feeding off my specific fears I find myself prepared and ready to counter what the game is throwing at me. If the game plays at my phobias then I won't be prepared at all. I'd prefer ambient horror that tries to scare you with a situation or place rather than a specific object (monsters, etc.).

The one I've found so far is The Stairwell (SCP 087). The graphics aren't fantastic, but I have a hard time moving forward into a limitless expanse without panicking. After about 4 flights I had to stop and was tempted to delete the file for a second. Sure I haven't finished it yet, but it terrified the living crap out of me.

So my question is, anyone know of another game that plays off a fear of nothingness?

You could check if there are mods for Amnesia that suits your tastes...

Silent hill is all about psychological mindfuck being projected into reality, so I'm not sure that counts.

The Void seems tailor made for you.

Have you tried Yume Nikki? (see this thread)

I wouldn't say it directly tailors to those with fears of nothingness, but nothingness certainly comes up in many places. Not entirely horror though. You should probably take a look at it and decide for yourself.

Oh right, there's still this.

Also, maybe SCP Containment Breach suits your fancy? I believe there's a pocket dimension where you're being hunted by one of the SCPs there already implemented.

Although not exactly what u looking for, maybe Slender?

You are stuck in a dark forest getting slowly chased by 1 guy and the only place to run is further into the darkness of the forest.

I had almost the same feelings when playing Dead Space for the 1st time.  Although a 3rd person shooter survival, just knowing that anything i ever met in this huuge dark spaceship was going to kill me.  Made every dark foggy corridor just as tense as the 1st as i had no idea where i was going or what to expect.

Is one of my top games for this gen, just needs to be played in dark with brightness set properly like Amnesia, unlike most uploaders on youtube that play it with brightness higher than daylight when the game is supposed to be very dark lol.

-Amnesia mods? A lot of them just don't have the atmosphere, relying mostly on jumpscares and monsters, but it's worth a look. I'll check it out later today.

- Silent Hill is a good one, but it doesn't target my phobias. I'm a fan of the series though, and I usually find the town itself more frightening than the otherworld.

- Yume Nikki seems interesting. I doubt it'll phase me since it's 2D, but it's free. I'll play a couple hours and see what I think.

- The Void is creepy, but it doesn't actually play off a fear of voids, or contain many from what I've seen of it. When I say voids I mean places devoid of landmarks or features.

- Slender isn't what I'm looking for. It's dread horror, which is good, but it relies on a monster to be the source of fear.

I appreciate the suggestions. It's kind of hard to find a game that plays off voids and nothingness.

Why play video games at all? Why not practice sensory deprivation? You'll get to experience the illusion of nothingness firsthand.
Arachnophobics can buy tarantulas, why should you be left out?

I can assure you that The Void does contain a void ;)

The entire game takes place in it and every single mechanic and piece of plot revolves around the theme.

Sensory deprivation is voluntary, and provides a consistent effect. With video games it's something unexpected, and you're going to experience it semi-involuntarily just by playing. Voids that don't involve absolute darkness are rarely seen in real life, but are easily emulated through games, which is really what I'm looking for.

I'll consider it then, but from the Let's Play I watched the first eighth to a quarter of the game doesn't have what I'd consider a void. I'll go further into the Let's Plays, and I'll stop and get it at the first void I spot.

This may be perfect, or perfectly opposite what you want: Closure.  It's essentially devoted to darkness and the unknown (and being creepy); but it's a puzzle game, not "horror."

It probably won't scare me, but I do enjoy a dark puzzle game.

EDIT: I picked it up, and it's unsettling as hell to me. I can play it, but I feel uncomfortable with every puzzle that involves phasing through the floor, which gets more and more common.

Kenophobia is the fear of voids or empty spaces. There are a couple places where this can pop up.

Spoiler: Example 1 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Example 2 (click to show/hide)

P.S. If you're kenophobic/nyptophobic, I'd recommend the game called SCP-087 rather than the Staircase (which is a lot more linear). It looks worse visually (which isn't saying much), but the gameplay is a lot more random, scarier, and just as dark. That one's free, but I wouldn't put it's lifetime past a couple hours overall.

If you're looking for general horror, go for Silent Hill 1-3. They're dated, but they're scary as hell. Then there is Amnesia. If you haven't played it, but you're looking for true survival horror this is for you. It has a slow build up, but it's amazing once it gets going.

Just remember, play in the dark with the proper settings for a better experience. Sure it might be a little hard to see, but seeing things well from a distance makes things a lot less scary. Let the audio and darkness let your mind run, especially for Amnesia.
