Games you can play while multi-tasking
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:14:42 am »

I'm looking for a game can be played in a somewhat hands off manner, that I can use while doing other things. Simulation games without a lot of micro management would probably the best fit to what I'm looking for.

I need your help finding the perfect procrastination tool! Any ideas?

Is Cosmic Supremacy still a thing? Maybe that will do. It's like a turn based 4X with time based turns.

Personally I play CK2 and pick a smaller country that requires less activity and only react when there are events that pop up. I put it on the second speed setting. It's how I get my fix for gaming when I need to do homework.

Wurm Online hands down. I can't count how many books and manga I read while playing that game.

Aurora - it actually demands you to multitask because turns can take a long time.  Also Rollercoaster Tycoon, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, certain mods of Minecraft, Gnomoria, DF...  Plenty, if you do it right.

Tribal Wars, any TBS game ever made, The Sims, Sudoku, a lot of DS games, Final Fantasy XIII (amirite?), Diablo 3 if you have multiple monitors.

I'll second Aurora, because I typically play the hell out of it when I'm working on the weekends. Has the added benefit of not eating up much memory or clock cycles when it's not actively processing a turn.

Any roguelike is also a good bet. I'm also partial to Battle for Wesnoth, or pausable strategy games like Crusader Kings, Victoria, etc. Hearts of Iron isn't as good a choice because it tends to require more micro management. Oh, and if you don't mind going retro, Colonization and Imperialism II are both good options.

Playing as a Japanese torpedo boat in Navyfield.

- Rush in the first minute of the game.
- Unload 50 torpedoes
- Get sunk

Or if you have time (and luck) wait another minute and unload another barrage of torps before sinking.

- Stay in the room and AFK till the battle ends.
