Ice fortress
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:00:40 am »

Hi everybody. i'm playing dwarf fortress not much, and yesterday, i had one interesting idea to make an Ice Fortress! But as far as i know, there is no possibility to make furniture, or different objects in workshops from ice. Only walls, and other constructions. But i want furniture, and other visible objects from ice (except bins, barrels). That is i want to make my dwarves to use ice just like simple stone. I think there is no way to make them do it wihout intervention in raws. So, who can help with ice and raws? Or are there any other opportunity?

1. Make a custom workshop. Optional but ideal.
2. Make a bunch of custom reactions.
3. Make sure the MOUNTAIN entity has the building and reactions permitted.
4. Generate a new world.
5. Try not to embark in biomes that occasionally thaw.
6. ???
7. PROFIT!

I'll do my best...
0. Open the wiki page(s) on modding.
1. Copy-paste and rename the soaper's workshop in...building_default?
2a. Open reaction_other.
2b. Make a new reaction, calling it something like [REACTION:ICE_BLOCKS]
2c. Give it a reagent of 1 BOULDER:NONE made of WATER:NONE.
2d. Give it a product of 2 BLOCKS:NONE:WATER:NONE.
2e. Make sure it has the other useful tags, like workshop and skill. Base it off of other reactions you see.
2f. Copy the reaction, rename it, and give it a different product.
3a. Open entity_default.
3b. Search for PERMITTED.
3c. Add PERMITTED_BUILDING:{name of building here}
3d. Add PERMITTED_REACTION:{name of reaction here} for each reaction you made.
π. Close and SAVE all text files you've opened.
4-7. No elaboration needed.

Any questions?

No problem. Well, probably, but it's not from anything happening here, it's more likely you forgetting that underground areas are above freezing...

You know what's even better than ice?

Pykrete: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pykrete

It's basically a mixture of ice and wood that is similar to ice, but takes longer to melt (higher specific heat) and is strong enough to stop bullets.  There was a plan to build aircraft carriers from it during WWII (since they'd be both cheap and basically unsinkable in above-freezing temperatures).

You could make a reaction that turns a log and an ice boulder or a log and a bucket of water into a boulder of pykrete, then another reaction to turn that boulder into pykrete armor or weapons.
