I'd go for Windows 8 now...it is pretty cheap and to my knowledge the price will be higher next year.

I like the combination between classical desktop and tablet screen. When you start Win8 you get a tablet-like screen, you instantly see if you have new mails etc. and it is very easy to switch between classical and touchbased view.

I've upgraded yesterday, no issues so far...even the old good x-com (the old one) runs well :)

Win 7 looks like the new least-hassle harbor, just read up a bit on its annoyances.  Like don't install stuff in Program Files unless you *want* its iron-fisted nanny protection secretly preventing you from making simple changes like you used to.
It's not hard to turn that off.
Control panel, system and security, user account control. Then set it to off.

Windows 7 is what you want..

Windows 8 replaces all the great tools on the Start Menu with some basic child friendly Touch screen tablet menu, no recent apps, no recent docs list for those apps, no 2 clicks from everywhere in pc, now a treasure hunt thru needlessly changed menus and hidden options.

Great for Tablets and Video games consoles, Crap and backwards for anyone that needs to get work done with their machines.

Also the fact that this new Metro screen is sold by M$ as an "Ad serving platform".  Most people still running the RP/CP get a spam free experience, ive been running the RTM for last few weeks and its a spam and advert loaded piece of crap.

Streaming adverts over a few app tiles spamming away on your Start Screen constantly, Adverts or placeholders for Ads on every page of most metro Apps blasting audio/video.  Is like going back to browsing the internet with some out of date browser like Internet Explorer and not using an Adblocker, but its all over the Os now and not just browser adverts.  Most people saying Win 8 is great hasnt seen this spam crap on the RTM yet.

ID say Win 7 is the new Xp as it will be the last Os from M$ that isnt pushing everything into a walled garden and hiding most common pc tasks under an advert covered video game interface.  Every time you use the Start Screen now its generating revenue for M$ with its spam adverts clogging up the app launching screen/menu.

Only reason to goto Win 8 is for the app store, but since the app store has under 1% of any other app store whats the point.  Will be even worse if u buy into that Surface RT that only runs store apps lol.

If win8 fails horribly enough, Microsoft will change their minds... Hopefully.
And anyway, a terribad OS always follows a good OS.

I say keep the XP on one computer, then buy a new one with 7 or 8.
That way, you can still play those good old nostalgia-inducing games 7 and/or 8 for some reason refuse to run.

Can't you just use an emulator?

Damn, lost a whole reply :(

Thanks all, for the advice. Touchscreen is indeed out of the question. Stupid idea :P

I say keep the XP on one computer, then buy a new one with 7 or 8.
I've been buying a new 2000 euro comp every 2 years (alternating desktop/laptop), but that has been out of the question since I got a gf&kid. Laptop is over 6yrs old btw, that one is up next, anyway. Pregnant girlfriend also did NOT appreciate me spending that much on hardware-for-personal-use...  :-\

Win8 is a lot like Win7, if you scratch the new UI (which is apparently possible), so the difference is minimal. The kernel of win8 is apparently somewhat faster in booting and multitasking, and has a lot better multi-monitor support. Just found out that Win8 was only officially released a few days ago, so there's not that many real (non-biased-press) reviews, yet... There are a lot of "love it or hate it"-type reviews out there.

Currently leaning towards 8, but I'll re-read the internet in about a week or two. If it turns out to be a Win ME, I'll pass, but up until now it looks just marginally better than 7.

I'd just like to say I love the way Vista isn't even considered.
BWAHAHAHA :)
Had to use it at work, for about two years. It worked, but hated every time I had to do something "OS"-y. I had that same experience cleaning up the Win7 OEM Work-laptop for my gf, had to reinstall that shit 3 times because something apparently screwed up.

You would be better trying the free trial of Win 8 before buying imo.  Win 8 is just Win 7 optimized for battery life but also with an adware loaded Start menu replacement that has almost no replacement features thats been removed by dropping the old start menu.  No right click or drag and drop from Desktop onto start screen is my biggest issues with it.

The faster startup is due to Windows hibernating now when clicking Shutdown instead of shutting down properly, Win 7 takes same time to resume from hibernate as Win 8 does booting so no difference really.

Any other speed increases is mostly due to 3/4 of services being disabled by default on Win 8 for battery life, Win 7 can be setup the same way but whats the point really as Win 7 already had decent battery life or on desktops theres no point in running with 3/4 the Os disabled if running on any remotely modern pc.

No point running a Tablet Os optimized/hobbled for mobile battery life if you need a general purpose Os for Desktop work.

All of you guys are being unfair towards Xp.
Sure,  its falling, but it certainly does as good as my old 8 year old windows 7.
Not to mention its also win32 with 2 Gb and a dual core. It can run servers and other expansive games/videos/etc.
I still say get a win7, but dont say that an Xp is not a good idea. Win8 is, but you can still use mouse/keyboard can't you? Also, cant you change the layout? O.o

XP is losing support, you won't get updates anymore, games are now starting to utilize directx 10/11, programs are starting to eat up more ram into the 64bit zone, its time to say goodbye :/

Yeah, I'm really happy with XP, but newer games don't support it no more :(

Newsflash: DirectX11.1 will not be supported by Win7, only Win8. Argh, why make this so hard?! Maybe I'll just go for 8, and hope for the best...

dont worry about that, the only thing i see the need for 11.1 is for 3d gaming instead of relying on proprietary tech from nvidia and AMD, nothing to worry about stick with 7.
