Fortress design
« on: October 27, 2012, 06:58:04 am »

Is there a site somewhere where people have uploaded their fortress designs?
I've been using the same basic layout for a while now and I think i need to try something new. Preferably that has a layout suitable for mine carts.
I prefer a nice organised layout, which is probably why I've stuck to my nice square design

Check this site, and download the map compressor via the link there. http://mkv25.net/dfma/
Then you can export images from DF, and compile the to maps like this one.  http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-11421-bridgeesteems
If you are on that site, click on browse maps to view recent additions.

The fortress looks nice, very organized and separated by functions. The modular thing's a bit of waste for storage space, though.

If you want some practice with organization, you could try what I've been doing and have dwarves and their industries in barrows with entire barrow dedicated to that one industry and those within's bedroom and dining room. For example, a farmer's barrow with fields, quern, farmer's workshop and still, so they won't ever be unable to get their seeds ( Unless it's one of those raw edible plants, which I don't plants beyond founding time. ) Stockpiles feeding those workshops are within the barrow, naturally, but I tend to disable farmers' hauling labors for efficiency.

Running cart routes between those barrows, or at least the non-perishable resources, could be doable if you have enough buffer stockpiles, though, and won't need protection if dwarves guides them. I don't have much experience in that, other than a few experiments to judge it not efficient enough outside of high production factories.
