Bug and grass type are wimps. Water types are okay but it might take longer then a day to catch a good one since so many are crap. I vote for the mountain. A fire or rock type would be great.

We're Paper. Obviously, Rock will choose Rock types. And what beats Rock types? Water types.

Do we want to win our first match against him?

Just wondering when you said
Beach! Catch a magical carp!

Which would make a interesting story of a loser and his loser pokemon losing but then latter finding their inner power and turning into a giant dragon worm thing. But it won't win the first battle.

Smack stuff with it for a while, or catch more than one 'Mon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It really isn't relevant now, because it looks like mountain hunting wins.
Rolling for encounter potential. Whats happening is that I select 6 pokemon that you can find, and use Random.org to decide what you can encounter. You rivals starter will be decided using the same method, but with Pokemon from the "opposite" area.

Hate to double post, but I don't want to create confusion by putting an update in a n edit.

You climb the mountain in search of a Pokemon. You find 3 points of interest.

You hear something snorting in the distance, sounds like something is in the middle of a good meal.
You can swear you hear something, crying. Like it lost something dear to it.
You see a nest filled with eggs on top of a barren tree. Maybe you could snag one?

Why have one egg when you can have 'em all? You manage to snatch 3 of the eggs, you better scram before mommy comes home.
....
After you finally come down the mountain you can barely hold your excitement, and the it appears the eggs can barely contain their contents either.
3 of these pop out
Spoiler: Congrats! (click to show/hide)
You sit and watch the newly born monsters nip at each other, the display warms your heart. Suddenly, the hatchlings look to you with helpless stares. They must be famished. You can't let Rock see you with starving Pokemon.
You need to find some food? What do you feed the newborns?

Catch rats!
There are non-sentient creatures around, right?
