If all of that was accomplished under a hour im giving away free ice cream at my house :P
No really i don't see kids needing to use a data recovery program, i never used one myself due to my rates of success is below 25%.

If you are still serious about the data issues run a hard drive test to fill in zeros for the free space.

Of course they don't need to, but curiosity is an extremely powerful motivator.

It has been my experience that kids are a hell of a lot more curious and computer literate than most people give them credit for.  Sometimes 'to see what happens' is a valid reason for doing something.

OP: Couldn't you just buy a new hard drive if you're that worried?  You can pick them up really quite cheaply these days.  Also, why do people download porn when it's available to stream for free?

Again. New hard drive = substantial chance of needing buying another copy of windows. MSDN licenses expire after your subscription expires and I would almost definitely be unable to reuse my windows keys. Its happened to my all 3 of my 10 windows 7 keys I've tried to use recently.

Really, what's the problem? Delete it if you care, and if they find it, whupidedoo. Unless you're terrified of them finding your credit card numbers or something...

If they want smut, they can find it in much easier ways.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

The problem, obviously, is either 1, He doesn't want their parents to get angry over him leaving porn on the computer he gave their children; or 2, His ex was into some really weird shit. In which case number 1 would be super-doubly relevant.

Both are true. But its also that I have files and information about my taxes, medical insurance, other financial crap. And I am pretty sure that my brothers wife will not approve of my ultra-violent video games either.

But I have pretty much done what I needed to do.

Search for file types that might contain stuff. *.txt, *.jpeg, *.mpg, etc.
Delete them.

Uninstall most programs.
Delete their directories.

I went through some pain attempting to figure out how to delete the history of those searches, and the recent documents lists of various applications. But all those were solved by deleting my user.

when done i used a disk scrubber to overwrite the free space a couple times.

I'll give it another look, but i think its safe now.

Now make an image file and write on it that they should not be using data-recovery programs, then remove it.
Just for the lulz.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.
