Golddepths, The Glorious Fortress (Succession Fort)
« on: October 26, 2012, 05:17:21 pm »

Hail! I am Eastep XI, a Glory of The Group of Glories! Our mighty nation, The Swift Key, has faced many adversaries in its time. Many say that our power wanes as the humans and goblins flood the world, and we lose ground to their beardless armies. They say that we, the Glories of The Swift Key, are third rate citizens in this world, Numkar, The Windy Dimension! They say that our many wars against our goblin neighbors have weakened Dwarvenkind, and The Swift Key. They say that not even The Group of Glories will aid our crumbling nation.
But we Glories say that they are wrong.
I am looking for all of six dwarves. Six, who can prove their mettle and earn their mead, who will journey with me to the darkest cesspit Numkar has. Nay, I lead you not to the depths of Hell itself, through the adamantium door to the depths, but to The Sludge of Stalkers. A freshwater swamp where two towers of evil and depravity stand to test the might of good and justice that Dwarvenkind embodies. I lead you to a task that not even the mighty elves will stand up to face. They have tried, yet dwarves have not! Would you let a son-of-an-elf say that his forefathers have tried to face the freshwater swamps, where yours have not?
We seven brave dwarves will do more than just face the two towers, Unitedtomes and Lightningdabble though. We will conquer them, and raise the mighty banner of The Swift Key over all the lands of The Sludge of Stalkers!
If you would join The Group of Glories, then sign your name, and know that it will be remember forever.

-------

I have been searching for a succession fortress for a while now, and every one that I have looked at has me going, "Meh... they are trying too hard to make it FUN."
I'm not looking for much FUN at all in this game. I am quite sure that it will come looking for us. I picked a freshwater swamp simply because the spot just nearby had no trees and was so cold that the water in the dwarfs' flasks would have frozen solid. So the next nearest spot was a sinister swamp with two towers on either side. After having set up all the stuff, I decided I would give my own succession fort a try.
As stated before, this succession game isn't set up to make as many possible situations for FUN as we can... I just want to see a number of idealistic dwarves suffer in a hole in the ground for a while. Thus, the rules are these:

1 - If you can't play out your turn two days after the last has ended, kindly let us know, and we shall have you go next, and the save shall skip over you. I understand that everybody has RL stuff to sort out, but I am also impatient. Two days to get it and play it sounds pretty reasonable to me...
2 - I would rather that you didn't actively go looking for the FUN. It should come to you. Intentional cave-ins, magma floods, and so on... this kind of ruins the experience. Make it spontaneous, or an accident, or both.
3 - First come, first served. If you want to be dorfed, then hurry up and claim one! All I ask is that if you are going to have your username on one of the dwarves, then could you at least shorten it to something less... internet-y? A dwarf named LeEtsawce is kind of immersion breaking. A dwarf named Leet is not.
4 - Have fun! The game should be enjoyable for everybody, and that is the goal we should all be working towards!

Player List

1st - Eastep (Eastep XI, The Glory)
2nd - Brewster (Brewster)
3rd - Peregarrett (Peregar)
4th - CaptainArchmage (Arch)
5th - Scruffy (Scruffy)
6th - Valrandir (Valrandir)

-----

This will be my first succession fort, so if you need any extra information, or I left something out, just let me know.

So, it's sinister swamp with access to necromancer tower?
Dorf me as Peregar, jeweler/trader/mechanic. Also, turn request.

And pics of embark site features would be nice.

I'll try and upp the pictures tonight or tomorrow morning. So far, the swamp is full of very creepy plants, tons of ponds that are likely full of fish, and seven terrified Dwarves.
I'll see if I can advance the turn tonight, or do it TOMOROW before I leave work!

Would like a turn and a dwarf please, preferably a weaponsmith.  :)

With any luck I'll get the turn before the FPS drops to un-playable levels.

I am starting my turn right now, so I'll dorf everybody, and then put up the screenshot of the surroundings. It's pretty much swampy, with a ton of puddles 'n stuff.
Eastep XI's reign will begin shortly!

+++From The Journal of Glory Eastep XI, Early Spring+++

We arrive.
This place smells of moss, death, and decay. Strange plants with eyeballs on them stare at us as we pass with our wagon. I can hear the screams even this far from Unitedtomes. The earth is not one that I am used to. It squishes underfoot, and everything seems to be... mushy. The plants, the ground, the moss... everything except for the skeletal creatures I have seen warily stalking us.
I fear this place.

+++A Scribbled Note and Sketch++
I wonder where we should begin burrowing for the winter? It must be defensible, and away from all of this dreaded, disgusting water...
Spoiler: "Eastep XI's Sketch" (click to show/hide)

+++Continued Entry+++

We brought dogs along for the journey. Loveable pups that would make good hunting dogs...
Two are missing. We have not even been here but one week, planning the future of our fortress, and already the gods have frowned on us! It isn't as if anybody has adopted them, or that we miss them dearly... I just suspect that those good hunting dogs may come back to hunt us. And if they do, they will meet a mighty party of Glories willing to take the challenge and hack them to bits! Donas, a hardy dwarf accustomed to life in the trees, has a hefty axe that will defend us against all evil in these Iklist forsaken swamps. It will be a challenge to settle this place, but I know that we shall do it, for the glory of The Swift Key!

+++Letter To The Swift Key, Early Spring+++

The plans have all been drafted for a mighty fort in which to carve out our name in these swamps! The necromancers have shown their true colors by avoiding us in their tall tower, showing clearly their cowardice. As we strike the earth near the most southern point of the map, we strike fear into the heart of the land. It will soon know the taste of justice and goodness!

Here you can see the progress we have already made into the soft dirt, and smile knowing that your Group of Glories is fulfilling the wishes of our great kingdom.
Spoiler: "The Fort" (click to show/hide)

+++A Report Marked "Mid-Spring"+++

Things are going well here in this place. We have beer, wine, plump helmets to eat... we have delved out some of the lodgings, and as soon as the damned carpenter Domas stops getting drunk out of his wits and builds his workshop, we will finally have beds to sleep on! The delvings will be finished soon, I am sure, and then this mighty fort's wheels will begin to turn... and they shall never stop.

-A scribbled note at the bottom of the report-
 i tak bac wht i sad bout domaz he iZ smartist evar an the furt wuld not run wifot himZ
i am stoopid an i lik to leev my bok neer the wagn an i micks my beeer with lotsa watter cuz its to strong for my wempy body

+++Journal Entry Marked "Mid-Spring"+++

Domas apparently found my journal from amid the vegetables (which he never goes near) and decided to try scribbling in it... I would reprimand him and slap him in irons, but we have no irons, and I need him working instead. Besides the point, he has also made a fierce show of running off one of our old dogs.
Who is now an undead menace, Armok be damned... I can understand now why the elves left so quickly. But none of them were Glories of The Swift Key, and none of them will remain when my Great-Grandchildren chop down their first tree. Other than these recent sightings, things move smoothly here in Golddepths. The stone beneath us brims with promise, and I can almost smell progress upon us...
Or maybe that smell is the layers of mud we have slept in, since Domas, our nearly-illiterate carpenter has neglected to build his workshop. Gods help me, if he doesn't pull his act together, he'll be the first to encounter an "accidental" cave-in...
These other fellows though, Arch and Peregare, they are lively chaps that have done the majority of the burrowing, almost perfectly to my designs! I could use more strong dwarves like them among the Group of Glories. Hopefully some of their family will be among the migrants, if ever they come...

+++Unsent Letter+++

Armok help us! The undead rove after us, haunting our very footsteps! Every staring eye plant in this damned swamp is staring at us! One of our dogs, lovingly nicknamed "Floppy" for being so big, is on the hunt for us... he has kept himself camped near the entrance to our fort, keeping us seperated from our work and the wagon remains! I will send Domas to help him and pray to every god I can name that he doesn't fall asleep in the process of killing the damned dog.
If this be the last message you receive, know that only the messenger made it from this hellhole we have settled.

- Eastep XI, Proud Glory of The Swift Key

+++Journal Entry+++

Praise! Domas has slain the beast! We continue to pile our meager possessions into the stockpile inside, and work continues smoothly. Domas' reward is to become the very first of our newest, and only, military squad. "The Glories of Battle". I expect many great things from this group, and I can see it's fame rising to become known across all of the known world! An elite group of dwarves, ready to serve the Glories and lay down their lives if necessary.
-Addition-
The dogs keep chasing us as we work, and I constantly have to send Domas after them. I think he has killed the same dog three times now, and still it rises from the grave... It's legs were missing... it was CRAWLING after us, relentlessly! I nearly spilled one of our barrels of dwarven wine running from it! I am a trained doctor and records keeper, not a mere hauler that spends time running from zombie dogs.
Hopefully Domas will continue to do his job correctly, if at all...

+++Eastep XI's Last Words+++
Oh look! It's my favorite of the dogs- at least the ones that still live... Come here Barkist! Come here and I'll give you a treat! Who is a good boy Barkist- oh... is your throat torn out boy...?

----------------------------------

Woe to Golddepths! Their Glory, Eastep XI has passed, in Mid-Spring, with the delvings being delved and the winter drawing closer! What dwarf will find the body and take up the arduous task of supporting his surviving friends from the fate that has befallen their former leader?!
With my character dead, I pass my turn to the next player, Brewster.
Here is the save! And I must say that my meager time playing was quite fun! A pack of dogs tried to kill Brewster, but then he led them over to Domas, who took an axe to their already demolished faces. I think he's racking up quite a nice kill count, until my character suddenly showed up dead while Domas was napping in a pile of mud.
Darn.

Well, our inGlorious Leader, Eastep, couldn't keep his head out of a puppy-dog's undead mouth. So, I'm taking over to as leader to keep our asses alive. As Eastep's body hit the earth I look to the horizon and see a flock of white stork corpses flying our way. I order everyone inside and pray a door can be made for the entrance.

19 Slate

Of course no farms are made. So I have those set-up while we wait on the damn door.

23 Slate

Finally a door! We lock and and we're all inside safe. Except the damn anvil is outside!! Forget it, it's safe for now, when we need it... I'll figure it out.

26th Slate

We strike coal, of course, now we need the filthy anvil. I unlock the door and everyone floods out of it like morons!! I order them back inside and Domas takes a nap right on the door, propping it open!! Stupid sob.

28th Slate

Since we can't go outwards, I've had the miners dig downwards.

7th Felsite
Domas wouldn't pick up the axe to chop down the newly found trees. So I had to dissolve the militia.

15th Felsite

Even the caverns are not safe.

On the surface I peak through the door and see Eastep and the same dog who slayed him tearing through the old wagon remains. Guarding the anvil!

23 Felsite

The cave croc killed one of our yaks and was running after the bull. Domas was thrown back into the military and sprinted after them, happily we discovered magma. Once Domas got to the croc, Domas didn't last long... but then the yak the croc killed, arose from death and killed the croc. I don't like the looks of all this!

After a mass of kill and unkilling... Brewster is throwing a tantrum. He has been stripped of his leadership.

Error w/ Dwarf Fortress File Depot currently. I'll post the save when it lets me.

One leader eaten by dogs, another thrown into a tantrum, and the next left to a fortress that might see those two come to destroy them!
I have a question though... Is it even the end of the first year yet? And has the cave croc pit been sealed off from the fort, or are things crawling in from the depths...?
Either way, I am thoroughly enjoying the fort do far! I am just hoping that a migrant wave brings more undead fodder- Er, slayers. And maybe a caravan's guard can thin out some of the undead on the way in! That would be so very helpful right now!

Say, would you be insulted if I started a betting pool on how long it takes for your dwarf to die?

Well, I brought extra food so that we could just barricade ourselves in and make rock crafts to trade with the merchants when they arrive... maybe that might be the best option right now? One iron axe, a lazy Dumbass- er, Domas, who was our only vaguely military dwarf, and a ton of undead...
Hopefully they can last until the Caravan gets here!

So, let me summarize.
It's not even the first year passed.
Most of our supplies(and anvil) are at the surface occupied by undead dogs and Eastep.
Undead yaks, cave crocodile and Domas inhabit the cavern.
There are only 5 (or less?) unhappy dwarves survived.
And it's my turn to fix it. Right?

Runs around chaotically and screams in panic
It's a truly a challenge for someone like me!
