Forgotten Beasts with webs
« on: October 26, 2012, 06:39:52 am »

I've just had a rather nasty encounter with a Forgotten Beast which sat around in a lake in the caverns below my fortress for 4 years until some stupid dwarf decided to throw a tantrum and hurl a very valuable (71200) and very heavy (271) artifact statue at the only door preventing it from getting. Clearly it wasn't able to destroy buildings otherwise it would have done so a long time ago.
To cut a long story short, it came up into my fortress, killed 60 dwarves before bleeding to death from a tail wound and then the fortress went into a tantrum spiral which lasted nearly 3 seasons. Funnily enough the uncontrollable dwarves managed to fend off a fairly large human siege just by being berserk and running at things with finely crafted silver battleaxes. I suppose the "Axelord" title on most of my military helped :)

Anyway, the reason the forgotten beast did so much damage was because any squad I sent at it just got webbed and then thrown at the nearest wall. I'm used to dealing with some of the nastier cave spiders but when a monster is firing out 7-length webs in all directions and filling up the central corridor in less than 10 seconds with corpses it's a problem.
How should these things be dealt with? A large corridor full of weapon traps had no effect at all.

upright spikes?
crossbow dorfs?
or you can try to guide FB through 1-tile narrow corridor to the militia waiting around the corner so they can try to land several hits on them before being webbed.

In this game you can find some FUN that can't be dealt in any sensible ways. I've read a story on ru DF forums about a FB that used to spread immobolizing gas on a wild range, filling almost entire cave. So even rangers could hardly make a single shot before turning into useless suffocating bodies.

The first small thing that made me feel awesome was my indoor waterfall. A few minutes later though, it started flooding my fort so I felt less awesome.

A question: could such webs be collected and spun into cloth? If so, you would likely have access to an infinite, free, and valuable resourse should you choose to trap such a creature in the future.

It can and have been done many times.
Note that that silk is always magma-safe.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

Not true - only demon silk is magma-safe.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It's not too valuable, IIRC, since it have base value of 1. However, it have been done for the challenge or for fun a couple times :D

Web-spewing creatures can be valuable for catching trapavoid animals/forgotten beasts/demons. I'm pretty sure if something spews webs, it can't be webbed though (you can catch giant cave spiders because they aren't trapavoid).

Try playing a civ that have towns and such, on a island separated from the mainland. In my last adventure i had a crazy amount of werebeasts and vampires to kill. Never seen so much before.
